Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
In all seriousness, does the word 'shit', or the first part of my signature offend anybody here to the point where they would give it a second thought and/or complain about it?
In the forums of a game where to win you need to assassinate people, exterminate cities, execute POW's and fight batles in which thousands of men die, it surprises me that a comedic quote from Family guy, or the word shit, would offend anybody, so please, post your comments, because i'm tired of being warned by mods for saying a mild swear word which everybody says at least once a day, and a funny quote for a cartoon.

Read the forum rules it tells you what the general theme of the site is for content of material that can be posted.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
You seem to have this problem on a lot of forums you visit Dayve. The rules state no swearwords. You agreed to the rules when you joined up, and then promptly break them. And it's all somebody else's fault.

I am not offended, but I know others may be. There is no need to use swear words as long as other, more eloquent options are open to express your thoughts and feelings. Learn to use them or go somewhere else. And please take this thread with you, because it does not belong here; it belongs in the Watchtower.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
Adrian is correct, this thread will shortly migrate.
The term of which you seem so enamored is a vulgarism. While probably not deeply offensive to any of the adults and near adults in the Backroom, it does offend some and there are other perfectly effective ways to express yourself that do not rely on such terms.
Besides, its just more fun etymologically, to use phrases like:
flaming rectal sphincter
or
phallologocentric
or
rectal-cranial inversion
and the like. Shows more wit.
I can trade vulgarisms with any under-educated 12-year old at a local convenience store. On a site dedicated to various versions of digital domination of Europe, I'd actually hope for a little more.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
i got warned for using the same word over and over in a poem :P... anyway... what is the problem... sometimes you must adjust to place you go to...
-
Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
So i take it since i can see two signatures here, one speaking of masturbation and one with the word 'pissing' in it, we can say whatever the we want in this part of the forum?
Awesome. I've found my home, because you know what? As Ricky from Trailerpark Boys said, if i can't swear.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
We've just debated bad language here recently:
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=72623
A couple of things I would add that are specific to the original poster's complaint.
First, the context and usage of bad language is important. If Hugh Grant swears two dozen times in the first few minutes of a light comedy film, it is less offensive than if a big pugnacious drunk approaches you threateningly and swears once in your face. I typically edit out swearwords that are used in a fairly innocent way (e.g. drat! (substitute swear word of choice) I hit my thumb with a hammer!) without bothering the poster. But where they are used to insult or attack, that's a different matter.
Second, moderators may are likely to treat repeat offenders more strictly. With a first offender, I may raise the issue by PM or give a zero point warning. With a persistent offender, I am likely to start giving warning points.
But again - it's not rocket science. It ultimately boils down to this:
Forum rules = no swearing.
Breaking forum rules = warning.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
Except for this forum, right? Because i see two signatures in this thread that violate forum rules, which leads me to believe this part of the forum is an exception.
Also if you can quote me on where i have used swear words in an offensive way towards anybody or anything in this forum, that'd be great. Thanks.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
"foreskin" and "pissing" are allowed, the f word is not. Surely it's not to much hassle?
-
Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
Wasn't there a member called Danny 4skin who was forced to change his name?
-
Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
So it's alright for a child to look over his mothers/fathers shoulder and read "I have a new hobby, retracting my foreskin" or whatever TF it is, but not a joke from Family Guy?
That's piss.

Awesome. I've found my home, because you know what? As Ricky from Trailerpark Boys said, if i can't swear, i'm fucked.
Foreskin retraction isn't masturbation. That relates to a thread in the backroom quite a while back about where a member mentioned that he had never retracted his foreskin in his entire life. Piss is one of those words that like bloody or hell over here in the UK, is no longer that much of a bad word. S*** and f*** are still vulgar and offensive and probably will continue to be for many years to come. The problem is not, as you seem to think "oooooh he said a bad word I'm so offended", it is the fact that such vulgarity is crass, impolite, unnecessary and only gives a bad impression of yourself to the board at large. I'm sure there are members here that otherwise swear like troopers, but they don't do it here and that's what counts.

If you believe the signature violates one of the rules of the forum - report it to the adminstrator. If a moderator or the adminstrator of this site decides my signature violates the rules - then I will change the signature, because that is what is required if I wish to post at this site, which has its rules to insure that the owners of the site don't have legal issues.
The rules clearly state. "Posts containing any generally objectionable material: knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violative of any law. Posting of copyrighted material, unless the copyright is owned by you or by The Guild, is discouraged. The Guild expects its patrons to remain civil even in the face of disagreements. Any kind of "flaming", slurs or insults adressed to an individual or a group is extremely inappropriate. Please respect etiquette at all times.
"
There are words that are in the grey area of acceptablity. Then there are words that clearly violate the forum rules. The word "piss" just happens to fall into that area. So since you find the word unacceptable the polite thing would be to either modify the signature or even change it. So a slight modification still protrays the meanin of the orginal word and "cleans" the way it was stated into a more polite form of the orginal meaning. ie - not a big deal to change a signature,
Now if a moderator informed me that they find the signature to be in violation of the forum rules - instead of going to the watchtower to make a public embrassement of myself for my choice of words - I would quietly just change the signature, because if a moderator informed me that the word is inapporiate.
There are things to protest about in the way some things are moderated in any site, but this is not one of them.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
We've had a lot of similar threads recently. It's getting boring.
 :snore:
If I recall it right, the wanrings always say something like :
"If you have an issue, you can always PM the staff"
Staff = in the first place the moderator concerned, and if you can't sort it out, one of the other moderators of that particular forum or you can always adress yourself to the Big Boss Tosa. If you still can't come to an agreement, you have 2 possibilities: a) accept or b) leave).
But the appropriate way is through PM

Indeed, but you probably don't want to see the PMs Davye has already sent me and an Admin. Makes his contributions in this thread sound like Julie Andrews.
BTW: Davye - FYI, there's no "piss" allowed in the M2TW forum. We don't have a centrally approved list of "acceptable" or "unacceptable" swearwords at the Org. Each moderator uses their own judgement. Mine is a zero tolerance policy. Just so you know.

Signatures are visible in all fora, not just the Backroom. So I'm assuming that whatever you put in your signature needs to be appropriate for all fora that you have ever posted in, and any that you wish to post into in the future.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
There's a checkbox for that in the reply window, if unchecked your sig will not be displayed. It's checked by default.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
What the F#ck!! No swearing!! Oh, well...It's not like I give a Sh%t!
lol
Mod: Forum rules say nothing about censored swears ;)
-
Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
Yes they do actually, they aren't allowed. Astericks all the way: ****
-
Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
If partially censored profanity isn't allowed in the backroom then it's most definitely not going to be allowed elsewhere.
-
Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
Just because the forum rules doesn't mention censored swearwords doesn't mean it is allowed. In fact, because it doesn't mention censored swearwords they count as normal ones. Also, several fora have stickies explaining that partialy censoring swearwords doesn't make a difference. We can still see which words you mean, so what's the point of allowing them?
-
Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
Aye if I use this word f***, you know what I mean. If I call you a c*** you know what I mean. This is just as offensive as anything else, personally I prefer swearing to be censored into this: %$#@
-
Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
Partially censored words are still a no-no in the Guides forums.

Re: Does my signature, or the 'S word' offend anybody here?
I'm personally not bothered by swear words, but the simple fact is that we do have kids that visit the forum. Now while I'm sure that most (if not all) of them are well aware of "naughty" words, there's no reason why they should be exposed to them more than necessary....and it's certainly not necessary in a game forum.
In addition, the less swearing there is, the more civil and pleasant this place remains. The Org is easily one of the nicest and most genteel forums I've ever come across; and I, for one, would prefer to keep it that way. ~:)
