Playing an English campaign on H/H – and I managed to marry Prince Rufus to a Danish princess. So, what do I get for that? Does the entire royal line in Denmark have to buy the farm before Rufus gets his inheritance? Does that even work?
If so, it may be time to train up some assassins to “move the process along”, so to speak.

I married a Venetian princess to a Byz prince and I hoped at least for a ceasefire, if not an alliance. (She didn't "run away", mind you).
The Byz dude just got the girl and kept attacking. Ha? Now that's some nerve!
In my current game as the scots i married the kings first born son to an english princess, and they are now king and queen (and he has the 'wretched wife' trait or similar, and his brother 'dislikes english')

Every time I try to marry of one of my princesses they fall for the general and I end up loosing them... :no:
To answer the OP's question, no marrying a princess does not let you inherit anything. It only serves as a tool to forge an alliance. (and at the same time increase your heir's loyalty, but then thats not really important) If the princess has charm and certain traits, she can benefit your heir, but otherwise, its just as good as an usual alliance.
Also, I found that if you eliminate the faction to which the princess you married belongs to, she dies as well (maybe a bug, not sure)

Your princesses only "run away" when you send them on a mission to marry an unmarried general of another faction (who is neither the King of the Heir) and attempt to being them into your faction. It is the equivilant to the agent dying during the mission, only in this case the Princess runs off with the general in question. I wonder what happens when the AI tries it on your generals??
If you marry to a Prince or King you should automatically get an alliance (but this is not to say the you will not be immediately attacked by said faction in the same turn.
In the first MTW as well as Shogun if you had an alliance with a faction and their heirs were wiped out you inherited some of their lands. In MTW you could forge those alliances with a princess.
In the current game I am playing I married my English daughter to the Danish faction heir. When I looked at the family tree I saw their prince with the English coat of arms in the upper left corner of his picture but the English heir was another son of mine.
Anyway, when that Danish prince inherited he attacked England. Perhaps believing he was entitled to claim England. However, in another game the Danish son ended up joining my family later on. Not sure what triggered that but it wasn't for many turns.
As for princesses the only use I can think of them for is as a free support diplomat. You can boost their charm by sending them out to give gifts and exchange maps. Right now all my princesses seem to be getting the "Yappy Little Dog" ancillary and of course the dreaded "Chastity Belt" ancillary. *sigh*
Once you build up a princess' charm you are more likely to be successful marrying her to another general and having him defect. However, after the first princess I've never been able to forge another alliance with any succeeding daughters. This may be a bug. (one of many) . . . (which probably won't get fixed)
If it all gets too much I load all my crappy units like shady dealer merchants, intolerant diplomats and disloyal generals and I send them on a one way sea voyage into the rebel fleet. No more support to pay and I can free up spots for more merchants to be recruited. (but at this point I'm about finished with merchants)

So we see that the majority of Ancillaries are based on the King and where he is, thuis if your King does not move much then all his princessses will tend to have he same Ancillaries...
Interestingly, when you marry a princess to a faction heir, he shows up in your family tree...

edit - oh.. do you mean he just appears on your familiy tree but you do not get control of him??
I think the active ability of marriage is bugged. For example, if you start a campaign as France and you send your princess to Caen, you can use the marriage ability to try and steal Robert from England and bring him into your family. If you are successful, Robert will step outside Caen and join the French faction, however, I think now he should be a member of the French family and appear on your family tree - but he doesn't. It will say French family member when you click on him, and he will have royal ties etc but won't appear on the tree. Then, I started to get weird "New Family member" messages every round. A new baby seemed to emerge, but the surname was seemingly random like "de Calais" etc. No new child appeared on the tree again.
A bug this is... I am certain of it...

I have not tried a faction heir yet.. but if they do join your family, then maybe there is a bug and they switched the trigger to join your family tree "wrongly" from generals to faction heir. So generals dont join and faction heirs do.. should be other round methinks...
I had a German faction general or family member (of this I ain't sure) join my Danish faction, after enticing him with some hot Danish princess arse . . .
But maybe that's just cause the Danish girls are so willing - nothing beats easy poontang :o)
Ehm *cough* perhaps that was a bit . . .
I've found the following:
1. If you marry your princess to a foreign faction heir, his slightly darkened picture shows next to her in your family tree, but the couple stays in the foreign faction, and you can not control him (or her any longer), and the game gives you no info about their kids. Your tree will show the foreign heir or king with a second heir or king symbol on the picture - I'm guessing as a potential secondary heir to your kingdom since your tree still shows it's own heir and king symbols on your characters as well.
2. If you marry your princess to a foreign family member (non-heir), and he joins your faction, you get him as a new family member to control on the board, but both of their pictures do not appear in the family tree. This character can actually become your faction heir and still not appear in your tree.
3. If you marry your princess to a foreign general (non family member), and he joins your faction instead of stealing her to his faction, the new couple both appear in your family tree, and you have full control of the general as your new family member.
4. Only the first of the previous 3 scenarios automatically produce an alliance just like if your heir or king marries a foreign faction princess. I think there should be some potential of inheriting rule over some foreign lands in the case your faction heir or king is married to a foreign princess (it would have to be a princess who is still part of their ruling family as it is possible for a princess to lose this status when she is no longer daughter of the king or heir), and all other potential claimants to their throne die off. This should be the case, though I've never seen that happen.
This family tree thing does seem to have something buggy in it (particularly the part where the foreign family member who marries into your family does not appear in your tree). Maybe this is because it could be possible that the foreign family member who joined your clan could be pulled back into his original family if he were to become their faction heir or king. Maybe a future game update will fix this or explain it better. I would like to see an expanded family tree section where you can view foreign family trees as well as your own. I don't think that information was kept as a military secret in medieval times. As it is you can't even find out that info with a spy.

It's a sad underdeveloped aspect of the game. I am afraid that modding will not be able to help it- but maybe I am wrong...

@Bob : a good number of factions start with non-family member generals, yes. Also, I think Men of the Hour are not guaranteed to get a cosy spot in your family tree, as I've had a few of them who had "Man of the Hour" twice : once to become full fledged generals, one to become glorious members of the Reich and bear offspring. Errm, bad word association. You know what I meant.
