No. Never has either, to be frank. I believe this is truly an Anglo-Saxon thing. Your societies must either have a higher percentage of kill-joys than the rest of us, or less self-confidence and respect for your own traditions. I keep hearing about American and British bans on Christmas decorations and customs because they are inflammable, bad for the for environment, offensive for Muslims, dangerous to kids, oppressive toward animals, etcetera etcetera.
Over here you can ritually kill Santa Claus and all his reindeer, douse them in a thousand gallons of kerosine and burn them in a schoolyard without anyone so much as batting an eyebrow. :wink3:
Re: Any xmas stupidity yet?
except for the Barking Buffoons on Hollywood Hill it's been disturbingly quiet on this front this year.

Beirut's already mentioned it, but some Christmas trees got temporarily taken down in Sea-Tac Airport because a Jewish guy wanted them to add a menorah and threatened to sue. The airport takes the easy legal route and takes down the trees, public opinion turns against the Rabbi, who asks for the trees to be replaced, saying he only wanted a menorah added, not the trees taken down (then why'd he threaten to sue?). Oh well, they're back now.

I wonder what Mel Brooks would have to say about an orthodox rabbi who feels left out of a Christmas display. 'Well there ya go! Liife is mesjooganer than the movies!'

This year too, or so I am told by our correspondent in London. No floral arrangements, paper bells or card-board Santas in many offices. No carol singing in certain schools, no trees in certain shopping malls.
Ho ho ho-o-o!
Re: Any xmas stupidity yet?
yo Ianofsmeg16 my manx friend (yessir) hows it going? I still cant figure out if i know you...I know you go to Castle Rushen HS. Btw my basketball team (western warriors, we are in the paper) is playing yours (southern all stars) tonight! You probably know most of their players; pemby, tasker, aidz, munro?
Anyway thats off topic, but here in IoM wasnt there some old guy who was offended by the christmas music being played dowtown strand street?
Re: Any xmas stupidity yet?
Sorry, haven't noticed anything like this. We usually decorate the cities with huge light chains in the pedestrian zone, a christmas market and other things.
So far I haven't heard about any complaints and it's not unfair either since the muslims had their ramadan tent as well and we can all just enjoy the atmosphere, can't we?
All that banning and sueing in your anglo-anmerican cultures is just weird and means people just don't understand the message.

I don't get it. What is so offensive? Are you the kind of person that hates kids, fireworks, cartoons, dogs and great sports events?
:stare:
I am neither a Christian nor a pagan, but the trees and nativity scenes don't offend me at all. To each his own - that is the subtext to the whole thing. If anything at this time of the year I 'celebrate' solstice. Not in any religious sense, but as natural phenomenon that brings the promise of spring, rebirth, new life. A time to commemorate, to celebrate the accomplishments of last year and to vow to put things right where I failed last time round. It's the only time of the year when I'm being a good atheist by donating (and liberally so) to the 'enemy' - the Salvation Army!
Ha! :2thumbsup:
Re: Any xmas stupidity yet?
If anyone finds any Christmas stuff offensive then they chould read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and realise how much they have in common with Scrooge.

But these are collectively exhaustive surely? :inquisitive:
I am all in favour of christmas decorations of all sorts, provided they do not obsure the true meaning of Christmas, namely get into those shops and spend spend spend, baby.
Anyway, these scare stories are cobblers. I give you a link to the GLA website, headed by the variously godless and muslim friendly Mr "Red" Ken Livingstone, http://www.london.gov.uk/trafalgarsq...vents/xmas.jsp, from which you will see that this year, as every year, there is a dirty great Xmas tree kindly provided by the people of Norway, in recognition of a little contretemps between 1939 and 1945, slap bang in the middle of Trafalgar square, and carol singing to boot.
Re: Any xmas stupidity yet?
I don't find it offensive for religious reasons, I just find having decorated trees and incessant toy advertising for 3 months a year really annoying. I should be able to walk through a mall or whatever without getting deafened by cheap Christmas music and with bright flashing lights on all sides persuading me that my little brother will really like toy xxx this year.
It's all rubbish anyway. Modern kids just want Nintendo Wiis. All other toy manufacturers would be doomed without ignorant adults buying children rubbish at Christmas.

I don't know. But Christians and pagans can be collectively exhausting, that's for sure - particularly in this forum.
Run along now, afternoon carol-singing with Ken starts in twenty minutes. ~:)
Re: Any xmas stupidity yet?
I wish someone would lift the ban on christmas snow around here :furious3:

Weihnachtsmarkt! ~
Best part of Germany (and Austria).
Re: Any xmas stupidity yet?
Eh, there are far better things about Germany than Weihnachtsmarkt. Though Glühwein is pretty tasty...

Instead, we have people who are trying to ban Black Peters...

Re: Any xmas stupidity yet?
I have to agree with all of you here, this seemingly growing fad (at least in England and the US) of trying to ban christmas decorations (or at least talking about banning them) and commercialising (though it can be a bit tedious seen as it's everywhere) in order not to offend muslims is just really stupid. The most stupid part of this whole thing is that it seems most muslims just don't care if you dance around a decorated tree once a year. Well, I've not met one who cares or is offended by this, and I haven't heard about it either (not here at least), though many people would actually want us to believe that it is the case.
