Recruitment issues post-Marian

Hi all,

Firstly, I'd just like to thank you guys for dedicating so much time to the creation of this mod. It has simply surpassed the original game in everyway and the release of 0.8 has breathed new life into Rome: Total War and I have been playing it religiously ever since :laugh4:

However, I have come across a problem with recruitment. I have recently had the Marian reforms and while the new troops are available, I can still only recruit in Italia. I was under the impression that after the Marian reforms, you'd be able to recruit legionaries further afield. I am, however, able to build the new factional barracks in areas other than Italia but I can't even recruit Town Watch with them (Vigiles I think). Also, I am unable to recruit any cavalry at all in Italia. Roma has the highest level barracks too.

I've had a look through the text files to see if I could spot the problem but I've found it very confusing as there are a lot of entries for each unit and lots of hidden resources with not terribly descriptives names, such as, "A" or "y4".

It seems like the Roman infantry require hidden resource B but only some provinces seem to have that.

I don't know if this is the cause (I'm thinking it's not but I thought I'd mention it anyway) but I edited the requirements for the Marian reforms to get rid of the year requirement as personally, I thought that if the circumstances are the same then it shouldn't really matter what year it was. So, I'm around 200 BC rather than 172 BC but I don't know if that matters.

Anyway, I would appreciate any help shedding light on this and any pointers to where and what I need to edit to fix this.

Something I forgot to mention - I have built a lot of Romanised government buildings (type 2) as I figured that's what I needed for legionaries outside of Italia.

Well if the Little building marker that says what the best government type would be says homeland then u should build Your top government building, i belive that you Need type 1 to build many of the roman troops, but ive only gone to the polybian reforms so maybe that only applies to it.

There is nothing wrong with your game if that is what you are wondering. After going over the exp_descr_buildings.txt, any type of legionary cohort is only recruitable in italy. Reformed cohorts and evocatae are only recruitable in the starting 5 provinces and segesta, antesignani in all of italy except the two southern provinces, and vigiles throughout all of italy.

And again you are correct, you should have no recruitable cavalry in italy, instead you must rely on recruiting auxilia cavalry from spain, gual, germany, and thrace, with the right level barracks and govt buidling (you say you have a type2 in most provinces outside of italy, so you should be able to recruit these already, as long as you have at least a lvl3 mic for most). Any other recruitable units outside of italy should be restricted to regional troops, however having a type2 govt will limit the selection, as intended.

This is how the Roman army was arranged after the Marian reforms: cohorts raised in Italy and supported by auxilia cavalry (and other type units) from around the rest of the empire, and as such is the way in the game.

However, once you get to the Augustian reforms, things seem to open up ALOT. You will have new auxilia infantry, cavalry, and archers from all over your empire, as long as you have enough type2 govts. And praetorian infantry and cavalry will also be recruitable in most of italy.

So your not able to recruit Legio IX Hispana?

So there is absolutely no reason to place typeI&II governments outside of Italy? If you never get faction units, then the only thing it does is give a 5-10% public order bonus.

Are you sure it was not intended to have units available outside of Italy (post-Marian)?

No it isn't. Historically it was the Augustan reforms which allowed wider recruitment. It was also Augustus who renamed and numbered the Legions. The type 2 will give you some Auxilleries but you might want to try type 3 and change over later after the Augustan reforms, at which point you WILL want type 2.

Is there any recruiting difference between a type III and a type IV? Does the economic one only allow you to reach MIC level (below 5)? Seems like a logical step since the focus is economic.

I guess I've misunderstood the intention of the reforms as I was under the impression that the Marian reforms allowed you to recruit legions outside of Italia.

Unfortunately, I don't control much of the areas you mentioned so I haven't seen any auxilia available yet though I am building a barracks that allows me to train them in Iberia.

I guess I made a bit of a mistake building type 2s so much.

Type four is an autonomous Client Kingdom with its own military. You'll get a lot of regional units from those MICs. Type three is basically half war between two anf four.

If I am right in assuming that you are using the default triggers for the reforms, I am kind of surprised here since you need at least 45 provinces captured and you say you don't control many of these areas. Have you been conquering in africa or Asia minor? If this is the case, then yea you kind of messed up :beam: . But get those iberian cavalry goin and ship em to your armies in your other lands. Gonna be tough retraining em though.

Yeah, I control all of the western half of africa (save the Sahara) and greece and a fair few provinces north of Greece (Thrace I guess) and all of Italia, sicily and corsica and sidinia. I also control the coast line of south and east Iberia but as I said, I've not long taken those provinces so I'm still building them up.

I didn't realise my recruitment would be so limited, particularly in Africa. I had a bit of a vendetta against the Cartheginians as they attacked me while they were marching through my lands with a military access agreement. So I proceeded to take all their holdings in Africa. That'll teach 'em :)

I have just finally built the barracks required in both Arsé and Bononia so I have auxilia cavalry at last and two types no less :)

I had a very similar situation before my HD crashed. (Not caused by EB! ~:) ) It was an epic battle for Sicily that wrapped up with me hunting down Hamilcar Barca's nephew and his 5 remaining bodyguards with a squadron of cavalry and toxotai. It was like the ending of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.
