Theres this under video: show_banners = 1
You should be able to turn it back on in the ingame options menu
Also this

Try modding that a bit.
Do you know where in the options menu? I can't find it anywhere.

delete all text in your medieval2.preference.cfg and post that, and it will work.
The fix for people wondering?
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
^^ Do not copy that mate - he's left in things you won't use :) Copying that file will change your settings to his, which really isn't a good idea.
You only want to change the [ui] settings.
