This is a question to those people who play the Total War games but who for whatever reason don't play it in multiplayer.
I can think of the problems with gamespy and connecting to games and bad language that has happened.
Are there any other reasons? There are a world of super players to test yourself against and to enjoy great fun with. :2thumbsup:

Do people still play multiplayer MTW?
Yes, but MTW's online community is definitely smaller than it once was. Partially due to its age, partially because of unit imbalances that were never fully rectified, and partially because a lot people play MTW with a mod--most of which are incompatible with each other in multiplayer. There are probably other factors as well, but I think the 3 I just listed are the main reasons why so few people play MTW online these days. Sad, but true. :no:Quote:

I played my first ever total war game online (MTW2) and only just lost. I think ppl dont play online because there doesnt seem to be much of a clan community. If anyones interested in playing some newb total war, PM me :)

There is a great clan community. Take a look at the tournement links on the .org website for more information. Some of the clans that play I think have been going for years. Destoyers is a young clan a only 1 and half yers old.Quote:

I understand why many may not play m2tw activly online simple because the requirement for online are much higher then they are for SP mode. On the other hand i think there is a great part of the community you are missing if you dont play online. I used to beat the commputer soundly on SP in RTW then i started playing online heavily. Then i went back to SP for fun about 3 months later and realized i was absolutly thrashing the computer. The level of play on multi drives you to play better and I think thats the best part.
Sure everyone who logs on multi is going to loose a few games. But once you get used to it and you start getting accustumed to how everything goes then you can really have some fun.
Also its much more satisfying to beat real people as opposed to the AI.

I really doubt I'm good enough. I haven't acctually, tried, but I'm not really good at online games against other people. Starcraft and Warcraft III(Which I loved for the stories and settings, but for which I was so bad that outside of the campaign I couldn't even beat the AI on easy), Counter Strike(Which I'm not horrible, but still not good compared to other players), Quake, Whatever.
I might try it, though, if I get a more stable connection. The AI is just so weak.

thats the mith about multiplayer, that people have to be good at it.

It bores me. All multiplayer matches are on the flat maps, wait till the pas abs have run out and melee.
As soon as I spent about a month online, it became impossible to go back to playing AI... I really can't stand battles vrs AI anymore, and the campaign gets tedious after your first two campaigns. As soon as you figure out how Campaign works, the rest is all clicking buttons until your eyeballs bleed.
I get into the sporting aspect of mutliplayer, and the community... some genuinely great peeps online, and good times to be had. Also, there is nothing like a great battle in a good tourney. You want more realism? Play in a sudden death final against a great opponent....I've played a lot of sports, and I can't remember anything causing such a sudden spike in heartrate as when it's deciding time in the middle of a grand melee....
Multiplayer takes on a new meaning once you clan up and get competitive... it's not about winning some battles against some randoms. It's more like shooting some stick with some m8's to get sharp enough for a real match that matters... and then jabbering about the bad moves and the good, or other existential questions on your clan forums....
The new tournament of MTWII, the Clan Community Shield (props to Bedi, and the other admins), has 34 or so clans signed up... it'll be a huge league that will last 6 months at least (sadly, lol)... and there are 3 other major TW tournies, and a collection of smaller tournies.
It's all 'just for fun', of course... the competitive aspects just add some sense of purpose to the play....
And it's easier to convince the wife that it is a legitimate hobby if you have to "practice for tournies" once in a while....

Yeah merc got exactly why i love to play multi on there mabey with a little more emphisis on the community though lots of good ppl play tw online and you can get to know people pretty well.

lag, time difference, love of sp, got better mp games to play.
Clan battles are where it's at in any mp game, and i don't have the time irl to compete in that way.

IMO TW multiplayer is one of the worst mp experiences you can have, but why do I play it religiously? There are the immature people but you just have to ignore them. You will find them anywhere. You can, though, find people who are very nice and fun to play with. Just like rl, when interacting with people there are jerks and there are very nice people, and if you take the time you will find the people that are genuinely fun to play with and talk to.
My advice is if you want to play a fun game, create a game on a map that you want. Generally competetive people avoid anything that is not flat, so you wont have to worry about jerk-skilled people owning you too hard.
Another suggestion is try entering a clan game and just be very pleasant and talkative to them. Whenever somebody comes into my games and is acting very nice and happy, I give them tips and help them. Sometimes when I find people like this I usually play 2-3 games with them. When I am not playing against other clan people I usually just experiment and have fun, alot of people are like this. Learn who are the respectful clans who are good natured (check the nominations for most honourable clans and this will give you a good shortlist) and I can guarantee that they will be good natured to you.
No clan community? Well you wont really find one unless you look for it. CA isnt exactly promoting the MP community and there isnt really one that exists here on the .ORG, but a few of us are working on that. You cant go into the lobby without seeing a horde of clans, so I dont know how that comment can be justified.
As merc and bed have said, playing against people is so much more exhilerating that playing AI. Now when I go into SP I quickly become bored and dont really find it enjoyable. Playing real people is the way to go, and ever since I joined a clan about 2-3? years ago I have been playing MP ever since. There is a great community out there you just have to find the people you want to converse with. It is a choice, after a while you just ignore the lobby chat altogether.

You realise right thats because people are at such similiar standards? If your a good players is vs a noob then you could go out with any old army. Its just like equipment in sport, your army is say your golf club, you need exactly the right kind of iron or you'll lose.Quote:

One word - tournaments. They do mean things. Don't like competiive tourneys? Well Yellow Mellon has been so kind as to setup a ladder for anyone on gs arcade, you can just work your way up the ladder as you improve.Quote:

Dig deeper than the lobby. go to the clan forums, when looking for a clan I deliberatly didn't yell out in the lobby "any clans recruiting" instead I visited various clans sites/forums to see which was right for me.Quote:

To fight multiplyer battles is the most interesting thing imo. It is often very hard, but you can learn a lot from experienced players. Also you are getting more skill in teamplay. Later, if you become better it is very interesting to fight against good other teams.
The best battle is that one with a close end - it does not depends on winning or loosing.

I'll add on to that. You don't need to be good. Hell, Anyone here will tell me that I'm a bad player, but do I care how good I am? No. I play for fun. Campgians IMO also get boring, because you know what going to happen,time after time. If you play online, you don't know what's going to happen in each game,beacuse it's so unpredicatble..
what he said, i like campaign, and have been playing them more recently with mods due to less people being around mtw, but nothing compares to mp, there are a group of mtw regulars who play well...regularly, and so you should get games if you get into lobby, and over time people get batterQuote:

To me, it simply comes down to the fact that if i want to play an online game, i'm going to play a fps rather than a rts, as that gives me the opportunity to actually use my skills (rather than practicing and memorising the best army to use) and play with other people i know for fun rather than competition.
