A feeling I havent had for a very long time
Sorry for the new thread, just couldnt find an appropriate thread.
Playing as Ptolomaic vh/vh about 20 turns in
I got this feeling .....
at first I couldnt describe it...I had a vagure memory I had felt this before...
a long time ago....
but what was it....
Oh yes ... It was the feeling of getting owned.... and not being able to do anything about it
:idea2: if I just refight that battle....no
:idea2: Ill go back a few turn and reinforce... no
:idea2: If I bring those unit from over there... no
:idea2: If I get EVERYONE and bring them to the battle.....
.... no
:help:
if I restart the game a re-think my 'vanilla-esc' RTW strategy :smash: ..... maybe
:book:
a strategy game where you need to think about strategy... priceless :2thumbsup:
Re: A feeling I havent had for a very long time
hah yea its nice to be worried about losing for a change
I wouldn't play with battles on VH because it gives the AI units crazy advantages like plus 7 morale and that kind of nonsense
Re: A feeling I havent had for a very long time
Thank you EB! You have made yet another person fall hopelessly in love with you! (I'm already there myself...)
Re: A feeling I havent had for a very long time
Heh, loved it as Armenia where I got crushed completely by rebel horse archers on about turn 3 on .74. I then changed my strategies and cleared out Asia and parts of Greece. Not easy, but fun.

Yeh your prolly right - I should tone it down to H (battles)
may have bitten off more than I could chew
glad to hear others are enjoying it as much as I.
Re: A feeling I havent had for a very long time
If you want to play VH battles, you'll have to invest heavily in ranged troops, as those are not quite as poorly matched as melee. Hit&run with ranged cavalry works very well, but they cost a lot. I've played Iberia on VH/VH in 0.74 and used nearly exclusively skirmishers, they hit hard and are cheap. Meet enemies on open ground and try to nullify their shields by encircling. Retreat when you're out of javelins, or your army becomes completely incoherent, and you'll get out of every battle with far less casualties than your foe and he'll likely be an easy picking in the next battle. As skirmishers are cheap, you can eventually field several full stacks. And you'll need them, as those heavily armored Romans shrug off your javelins...
Re: A feeling I havent had for a very long time
Can you change the setttings after you have played the game for a while?
Im playing Romani vh/vh and when I fight the battles, the Gaulish units rip through my Legionaires.

All you need is the save game editor RomeSage
Dunno if it works with EB though.
Re: A feeling I havent had for a very long time
Medium battle difficulty, that's what is recommended for this mod isn't it? (No crazy bonuses and such, and the balancement was made to work best at Medium, if I'm not mistaken.)

Oh I didnt know there was a recommended hardness setting = my fault not reading enough of posts.
I wouldnt recommend trying to alter the setting of a saved game - I would just start anew.
Re: A feeling I havent had for a very long time
Again my apologies as Im sure this has been posted before
but what are the actual recommended difficulty settings for the best and most authentic EB experience
battle/strat
??

Strategic Map: VH
Battle Map: Medium

Does setting the strategic map to VH have any effect other than ensuring that half of your provinces are constantly revolting?

It gives the A.I. a cash bonus in addition to the already scripted one, and it makes the Eleutheroi much more aggressive. This is more realistic since the independent states of EBs time frame weren't sitting still either.

I strongly feel Medium (Battle Map) is not fair to the AI. The AI is so thick when it comes to flanking and taking the high-ground. I think at least Hard for Battle Map is needed. Some really get a kick out of VH too, but that can get a little scarey when the AI starts getting the better units later in the game.
I'm not trying to step on EB's toes or their house rules. I'm just recommending you try at least Hard (Battle Map) to get a better nail-biting experience.
Re: A feeling I havent had for a very long time
Everyone is more than welcome to play on hard or very hard battle difficulty. Just don't complain that your Spartans are being whooped by some lowly Hastatai. If the battle setting aren't on medium than don't expect the stats to be balanced, that's all we're really saying.

Or when peltasti pwn your general's cavalry?? :laugh4:
