The Australian National Anthem. A contraversial topic.
Some say it is out of date, and not true to today's Australia.
The Current Anthem
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
No one knows the second verse.
What does girt mean anyway :laugh4:
:gah: On the Anthem!
Other solutions include:
Tie me kangaroo down, sport
I still call Australia home (crap IMO)
Down Under
and of course: Waltzing Matilda
Lyrics for Down Under:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,
Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.
Buying bread from a man in brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, do you speak-a my language?
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,
I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.
Lying in a den in bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?
And he said,
Oh! do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Cant you hear, cant you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.
It's a great song, I reckon it should be the Australian National Anthem. If nothing else, we will sound cool while singing it! :laugh4:

Re: Australian National Anthem
@the anthem - it's ****. Probably teh worst in the world imo - there's no real meaning in it whatsoever.
@what girt means - in that context it means 'surrounded'
@the options - all rubbish too :laugh4:
There was a mention in the paper about Vandstone writing a replacement in her spare time - if you can did up the lyrics of that im' sure it woudl be worth a laugh :)

Chasers War on Everything should make an Anthem.
They are awsome. People complain to the ABC about them making fun of the Tax Avoidance done by Kerry Packer, then they call the PM, John Howard, a pedophile, and no one complains.....:laugh4:

Re: Australian National Anthem
They did a brilliant stunt some years back in their magazine.
On the front cover were the words:
"John Howard doesn't listen to the Australian people...so call him at home on [number]"
It was his real phone number :laugh4:

Ahhh Chaser's War, I got half the show on DVD, need to find the others.
I have no problem with our current national anthem, but that is because I don't see it as all that important. Who needs it? That said, if it changed, I want absolutely no reference to Vegemite, stereotypes, or Britain.

Re: Australian National Anthem
It was.
Maybe we should have a seperate thread for the Chasers though.
Back on topic :focus: I heard Vandstone's song on the news. 5 verses? We cant even do 2 of the current one, or all of Waltzing Matilda.
:no: Senator, thats 6 years of your life wasted, even the PM was laughing at you.
on the run, with kangaroos, and heaps of pies dancing around you!
- okay, maybe not, maybe someone else should make one.
Or maybe we should have John Howard sing a new song, i'd like to see him sing something.

What happened to God Save the Queen, America still has a British Queen (just she doesn't have anything to do with the place).

America has queens from a lot of countries, particularly in San Francisco, but only a few have anthems they sing and none are appropriate for Australian sporting occasions.

Some nice suggestions. I propose 'My boomarang wont come back' or 'Someones pinched me winkles'.
Just an Comment, no aussie in there right mond would bow to any Queen of Brits, no matter how noble they are.

We are just too lazy to be a republic!
And we would lose the chance to smash everyone else at the Commonwealth Games :laugh3:
Bruce is not a very common name.
Blimey that was steortypical, but i'll let it slide, because it was Monty Python. :laugh4:

In the words of the subbed Osama
"Shannon Noll and I are alike, we are each doing what we can to take down Western Civilisation"
I can say that can't I?

On the republic thingy. Is it like the UK where if we didn't have madge as head of state we'd have President Blair instead? :inquisitive: :sweatdrop:
It took my Yank step-mom some time to see it, but she does now. :yes:

We dont need a Queen though. All the royal family does for us here in AUS is waste money. And provide scandals.
We've got royalty in Denmark. I think we can have just one royal family.

What money does she waste and what scandels? I mean the Royals must be practically free for you by comparison. What practical reason do you have for getting rid of the Queen etc.?
