Playing as KH

I was playing and trying to keep culture, army, and everything in check. Unfortunately the Ptolemi broke their alliance with me and after several years of conflict I amassed a single army, stomped on Alexandria and executed the populous without thinking of the political and cultural ramifications of destroying the city. Ever since that turn I have been unmotivated to continue the campaign. Someone clear my conscience and give me some sort of justification so that I may continue it before the release of 0.81

For breaking the alliance the citizens of Alexandria payed with their lives and their possessions, so that they would know the consequences of such a betrayal. The world will now know that the might of the Greek Cities should never again be underestimated.

Basically you have ruined your nations reputation. Your armies have massacred a city full of innocents! The Egyptian government decided it was time for war with the Greeks, and so you have massacred thousands of innocent civilians... Imagine you were a young 18 year old boy in that city, and you were like, Woohoo, i just got my driving license, the girl of my dreams just said she'd go on a date with me, my dad just bought me my first horse, it's black, sturdy, 1 previous owner, good mileage, 0-20 in 15 seconds... Ah! The Greeks are here to slaughter me and my girlfriend and my family! My life is ruined!

I would just quit the campaign... Nobody can live with that on their conscience.

Grind up Alexander's drying viscera, divy it up into amphorae and sell it as a potion to Macedon kings.

Personally my first thought wasn't the innocent bloodshed, but the possible harm of scientists, inventors and the like that flocked to Alexandria. Now 15 years later and an enormous population boom, the consequences are far forgotten with an even further Hellenized Alexandria. It remains surrounded by a Ptomelaic empire as a great economic port center for a newly united Greek empire sitting as far east as Salamis. The dissenting free governments have been given the iron fist by the Attikos family that has secured heirs despite being given broken penii by the EB scripting team!

So...does that mean mission accomplished?

I think the U.N. should impose sanctions on you.

Ah, but the Ptolemaioi didn't exactly promote practical appliances of science. They had all the basic knowledge to build a working steam engine, but didn't think that it was worth the effort. You can do better then them.
And now that Alexandria has a lot of free real-estate, you can import lots of Hellenes to make it a true bastion of Hellenism.

Besides, it's very probable that Alexandria would have rebelled against you if you had let everyone live, forcing you to besiege it again. The quarter or so that now live are much better off this way.

Yeah dont you know anything about economics? Less people means less job competition means higher wages means better living conditions for everyone (thats left). Good job, you just helped alot of people at the cost of a much larger amount of people, but lets not be negative.

Heron never did anything with all of his steam invensions because you didn't need to develop machines for work when you had tons of slave to near-slave Eqyptians around to do everthing. And you don't need to invent a form of transportation when you have a 'highway' like the Nile. This was all quite a ways into the Roman controlled Egypt time, by the way. Nearly all of Heron's revolutionary inventions were made to amaze people, attracting them to a temple and away from the new eastern cult that was spreading through the area.

Though if I had a time machine, one of the top three things I would do is talk to Heron and show him how to make a piston.

If only he had a more combustible liquid than water to work with! And thank you all for inspiring me to continue. I'm now in 230 and the Selekids are sending their last masses at me and being partially successful. Unfortunately, I was able to turn Baktria against them who had curiously been allied with them the entire game as opposed to... just about every other game I've played. They had pushed me back to just the western border of Asia Minor with Halikarn., Pergamon, and Nikita my only cities left. So now as I batter down their remains they will push their armies back east where the belong to defend against the emerging power! It is also amazing how a little money can keep Ptolemy and Rome at bay. Syracuse and Sinope led revolts and both honored their successes to strengthening Greece and its former glory.

Did Caesar regret or mourn the barbarian civilian deaths he caused? ( I know, he's not KH)... Didn't he, in a way, provoke a fight with far more Gauls than he was originally authorized to fight, and then burn down town after town? I don't recall any weeping in "Conquest of Gaul"... I guess we can be glad they didn't have nuked back then?

I know, necessity is the father of invention allright.

Still, if the decadent Ptolemaioi put a mere 1/10 of the money they'd normally spend on black jack and hookers on supporting pioneers like Heron, maybe they'd have come up with something useful instead of this plaything:

The point was, while Alexandria produced quite a lot of theoretical knowledge, it isn't as if they ever did much useful with it. Apart from some innovations in siege engines, I don't know about any true applications in fact. What true advancement came out of Alexandria?

Medical.
In Alexandria it wasn't against the law to disect corpses. You can learn alot about something when you actually know what it looks like. Between this and the convergence of so many cultures, Alexandria made many great advancements. Near the end of the Roman empire, medical technology was on par with late 19th century medicine.

There were also advancements in architecture, math, and physics. The Earth's circumference was calculated and was only off by a couple miles at this time. (Yes they knew the world was round. That has been known since ancient Eqypt & Sumeria.)

A great amount of literature and philosophy was accomplished too. The kind of stuff that was lost for good in the many fires (accidental and purposeful) that the library had.

Again, most of this stuff happened under Roman rule.
