Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
The EB Team has had some problems with our FTP Server, and it's still not back to full functionality. In particular, browser access to files is not working normally. In order to download a file, you currently have to use either an FTP Client or be able to switch your Browser into "non-passive FTP" mode. As a result, when we post the Patch, it's going to be difficult for Opera and Firefox users to download the file - and even IE users with unmodified Browsers will get failures. This is one of the reasons why we are trying to have as many seeded torrents as possible, BEFORE the release.
A few things you can do to prepare:
1) Switch your browser into "non-passive FTP" mode (see the image of a modified IE Browser setting below)
2) If any of you know how to do something similar for Firefox and Opera, please post instructions/screenshots in this thread.
3) Use the BitTorrent links posted as part of the Public Release Announcement (and if you don't know anything about torrents, google is your friend - please read up ahead of time)
4) Volunteer to be Torrent Seeder (for details, see this thread)

Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
I think Firefox natively uses passive FTP, but if not there are some extensions for FTP clients to use inside Firefox if you aren't well versed with command line FTP (great if you use Linux, but can be done in Windows) or a client.
I would have offered to host the torrent myself, but the internet in my apartment is just atrocious and firewalled like crazy - sometimes shutting down on me and absolutely refuses torrents.
Edit: If needed, FireFTP seems to be a really nice extension. It is unsigned, so you will have to add it to the list of websites allowing installs, but there is an option for passive FTP. Once installed, go to the Add-ons window and configure FireFTP with the preferences button. In the "Interface" tab, click "Configure FTP links in Firefox to automatically use FireFTP". Underneath that is a button that sets FireFTP to "Use passive mode for these connections". That should be it.

Anyone else using a mac with Safari to download? Its the only computer available with internet access, and I really have no familiarity with it.

Anybody with a really non-standard setup is probably on their own, but it's not hopeless. Just run a google search for something like <browser name> (in your case, "safari") and "passive ftp" or "non-passive FTP". Hopefully that generates some hits and you can figure out what to do.
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
Thanks for the download info on .81. I'll get mine when I'm finished my Campaign.
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
If you're using a mac, you can get Azureus and download via bittorrent. Google for it, it has a mac version on its website if you click 'all OS's'.
I'll seed on bittorrent once its out. I have pretty decent speeds, and my PC is on for about 16 hours a day...
Big dilemma: Continue my Macedonian campaign on 0.8, which is getting interesting now Im playing the romans and the getai against each other, or upgrade to 0.81 and play the roman campaign I have been promising myself...
Edit: I would volunteer to be an initial seeder, but Im about to switch my PC off for the next 8 hours, and by the time I get up tomorrow morning Im sure it will be released and all sorted out. But I'll seed lots tomorrow to make up for it!

Just copy the whole v.80 directory and add v.81 on top of the copy. That way you can have both v.80 AND v.81 (although I KNOW what's going to happen to your Makedonian campaign after you load that first v.81 "test" )

I had no problem at all downloading it with Opera 9.10, just by clicking the link on the other thread. :2thumbsup:
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
I can second that, Opera 9.1 downloads from the FTP with no changes needed.
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
Ok laugh at me, but I have download Azureus to download the torrent. The FTP stuff webpage didnt appeared to me.
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
The important thing here is that the EB Team wanted to make sure you guys knew that there might be problems, and we went the extra mile to try and make the download process as painless as possible. So nobody is laughing at anyone. The occasional glitch and hiccup are inevitable, but on the whole we are just happy that the V.81 Release has gone so smoothly. :2thumbsup:
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
Dumb ? time. Is .81 staying a patch? Or will there be a full install. Without having to download .80.

It's already there. Check out the Public Announcement again. You can download either the patch (72MB) or the full install (@350MB v.8 plus v.81)
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
Well for what its worth, me not knowing anything about torrents, I just downloaded the patch at a whopping 2mbit solid throughput from the FTP with a more or less standard Firefox install.
That was pretty damn sweet :)
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
Thanks. I missed that one.
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
Two things:
1) Dunno anything about torrents, but if you whish to download directly from the FTP server you have, (or at least I had to), to right click the appropiate link, (that one called FTP), and select Save Target. Then everything will be fine, or at least was for me.
2) The reason why you should back up vanilla is that the installer also overwrites certain files outwith the EB folder. Those files that are overwritten I know of are the vegetation textures. (Prometheus grass textures, for instance.) This measure is taken to prevent an annoying CTD from occuring.
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
The Prometheus files are copied into the vanilla directory to avoid the pre-battle CTD, yes, but these files are not part of the vanilla installation and thus are not overwritten. They will be ignored by vanilla and other mods that do not specifically reference them. Don't know about the other files that go into the vanilla directory though.
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
The FTP worked fine for me without having to right-click or switch to "passive FTP mode".

I was pretty sure they saved over the vanilla...
Re: Before you Download the v.81 Patch - "Must Know" Information for Fans!
Yes, the other files placed in the vanilla directory could do this, I'm not sure. However, I'm absolutely certain the Prometheus files are not. That's why they are copied in there in the first place.
