Kindly forgive me for re-visiting this but it's driving me nuts (why doesn't my stuff work as good as other's :furious3: ?)
It has now come to my awareness that there are versions of RTW produced by Activision. Mine is the CA-Sega version of RTW Gold. I've tried installing the 1.5 patch and overwriting the playable factions file. It still doesn't farkin work :wall: Is the Sega version resistant to this mod? This is drivin me up the wall, kindly help, thanks

If you've got Gold I don't think you need to instal the 1.5 patch.
Gold is patched up to v1.5 already. Post up the contents of the file you're trying to edit inside [ code][ /code] tags.

I too have the SEGA DVD version of R:TW Gold, yet it works for me. As last time I am still utterly confused as to why. May I request information about what files are in your C:/Program Files/Rome - Total War/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign folder. Is there a file called descr_strat. If there is then it will look like this:
All you have to do is change it to (the spaces at the front are tab keys):
Hopefully that should enable you to play as all factions.

BTW, Cambyses II, I think you can disable that code thingee from working by typing [noparse][/noparse] and inserting the tags between the noparse tags.

Ok, I uninstalled the thing, reinstalled and I ended up with 4 different descr notepads, they now look like this 1st is the original

I didn't download anything these are what pops up with the original installation and then I did cut and paste work. i made some progress, I started off with the normally lockked factions appearing immediately, not the basic 5, but

STILL DO NOT APPEAR. SO basically i have what I had before after winning a campaign but now my saves are gone:wall: Any ideas? Thanks

Ok correction (I can't edit posts for some reason) apparently it didn't do a full uninstall, even though I went through add/remove programs b/c my saved stuff is still there, but should this mattter? thanks

You can't have four different descr_strat.txt files with the same name in the same folder. If you have just reinstalled the game and not done anything else, then whichever one is just called descr_strat.txt is the perfect, original 1.5 file. Make a backup copy and then alter it exactly as Omanes has shown you.

This mod is becoming my own personal "White Whale". Since the last uninstall didn't work (I still had the "all factions" patches in there, I am uninstalling again. Do I need to put an old game into the fireplace as a sacrifice to the computer game gods? Anyway, i'm going to do a hard boot, reinstall and see if the old stuff is there still. Why is this so hard? :wall: (sigh)

After uninstalling, why not delete all the various versions of the descr_strat file? Then when you reinstall you'll just have one and you can easily mod that to make all factions playable.
If it is frustrating you that much, just download the all factions mod from the total war center. The forum is dead at the moment, but when it comes back online, I will post a link.
Just go to TWC and download the "all factions" thing, not sure if it is here, havent really looked.

My second uninstall, despite going through add/remove programs didn't work for whatever reason. the four files and my saves are in there after I reinstalled the discs :furious3: So I'm going to try to delete the other 3 descr files and modify the original one, verbatim from Omanes. I'd like some strong drink right now, but that doesn't really help with operations like this, I've learned :beam: thanks
