I thought this would have been mentioned before but a search did not come up with anything.
What determines how many bodyguards are in a general's unit? They all seem to be different numbers and I know that they heal after battles but how long back to full strength? What is full strength?
Normal 16 Prince 20 Leader 24.
+1 bodyguard for each point of personal security.
Note this applies to small unit sizes only.
How long it takes to get to full strength depends. Usually 3-4 turns if all bodyguards had been killed.

So unless they are healing, it should be 16,20,24 right? I never paid too much attention to it but it always seemed like every general/prince/king all had different bodyguard numbers even amongst themselves.
i think ancilliarys have something to do with it as well
Ancilliaries can add personal security, so that would probably do it. Not sure if any other ancilliary attributes would. Be interesting if "veteran warrior" and those actually added one to the bodyguard though. One representing the ancilliary himself, I mean. (And a little frolicking fool beside the general, and an adultress behind him in the saddle, and a faithful pup at his side, and...)Quote:

Default is normal size. As I said in my first post, I was referencing small unit sizes.

Right, 16/20/24 are base on small sizes (i.e. listed numbers in the EDU). Normal is what I am playing atm, in which case you multiply the EDU size numbers by 1.25. So, that means bodyguard would be base 20, or 25 for princes and 30 for faction leaders. Again, those are modified somehow by personal security - I've had a general rolling around w/ about 40 the one time. IIRC he had been facing milanese assassins, and as a result had become very paranoid, and a bit insane too. Who cares though? He had an awesome cavalry squad.
If only other 2hp units were like the generals being able to automatically replenish, they would suddenly become so much better
Speaking of that, anyone figure out yet what exactly governs it in the game? Is it a specific benefit attached to the bodyguards of any main character, or is it defined in the EDU? My first guess would've been general_unit in the attributes is causing it, but I don't have enough time ever to actually test all my ideas, lol. So, maybe someone else has made general bodyguard units recruitable w/o attached generals, and could give feedback on whether or not they seem to regenerate even w/o the named character as part of the crew?Quote:

The incredibly cool Generals unit is the one for some of the english historical battles. It is basically a unit of DEKs with 2 hp each and rad stats. I would actually like to mod it in as the english generals unit. Having the King himself take the gate house would be cool. Not to mention defending a gate right behind a line of stakes.:smash: :smash: :smash:
So... when you tag a unit with generals_unit, then when you recruit it a general comes along? I think that's what it sounds like you're saying. That's interesting if it's the case.Quote:

Does having armoury which has been upgraded to be able to do 'Partial Plate' armor upgrade (default armor for Generals) able to increase or 'heal' the general units? I remembered having one of my generals appear in 'Recruitment' slots...so there must be something to it, it'd be nice to be able to train them faster even at certain price.
@Foz - I'm not sure what you mean. Factions always get the same generals unit - it only varies in numbers
What I mean is, how does the game decide what bodyguards you can get with each faction? You can see the general units are actually tagged w/ general_unit attribute in the EDU, and also appear to be assigned to factions using the normal ownership and era settings. So it's a question of whether the game will use the EDU to determine which unit(s) become the bodyguard of a fresh general, or if the unit to assign is actually in the code. And then if it is decided by the EDU, are you allowed to assign multiple possible bodyguards for the same era, and if so how does the game handle that?

The bodyguard unit given to a new general campaign is always the first unit in the edu file with the general_unit attribute for that faction. Any other units with the general_unit attribute will only beocme generals when recruited.

Well, according to its descript its better than a bodyguard (and according to the file, it is because bodyguards lower your popularity while dogs don't)
