There are mods outthere which allow you to play as the mongols or timurids. I don't have them myself, but you can probably find them here or at twcenter.
I read that it meant starting with a very small holding to the east, and then getting a horde of reinforcements at the relevant dates.
Other guildmembers may know more specifics.

The mod changes just 4 files which can be backed up (I made a new folder called 'original files') I played the campaign as Mongols, it was great fun.
You begin with one region, Sarkel. The 'hordes' do appear and you have control of them but they are much reduced compared to the vanilla game. I completed the victory terms of 50 regions but continued to play because I was interested to see exactly what happened when they arrive. I believe the first announcement of this threat came in 1209.
Observations....
When they arrive, any spies, assassins, diplomats or governors in a settlement are kicked out; it is a bit of nuisance but you simply send them back inside. The other problem is cashflow. I saw my hundreds of thousands reduced to a huge deficit and each turn you go further into debt.
Verdict.....
A great little mod. No doubt you will have won long before the hordes arrive

it would be nice if Mongols/Timurids will have a mod just like in BI that allows you to wait until your hordes arrive in the map. This makes campaign more realistic and exciting:yes:
There is a way - enable hotseat multiplayer, start a campaign as england and then release control by opening teh console and typing:
control timurids
control england
The game will then autopilot through the next few hundred turns (NB: This will take a long time) and you gain control when the horde appears
what if you modded the events folder. wouldnt that autopilot the mongols and timurids to appear earlier like say a turn after the game starts?
Does the hotseat solution let you fight defensive battles normally ?
