Well I have played almost every factions in EB and I must say that playing as the Romans must be the esiest I played. Romans economy is realy good and they also have realy good units from the beginnig. I hadent played the Romans since the beta 0.74.
So I gave them I try but stop because its just to easy. I always play on VH/M.
So my question is this....Is this intended from the EB team that it should be this easy???

As Romans I had 500,000 gold before I left Italy. Greece feels balanced but Italy has money trees.
I wouldn't say easy, this is a screenshot made in my current Romani campaign (VH-H BI-exe First Cohort mod)
For the occasion I also turned of the fog of war to let you notice the Arche Seleukeia expansion in Egypt (They are even sending armies to sack Lepki :whip:) and deep into Greek territories, they are holding both Epeiros' and Macedonia's capital. The Sabeans and Saka Rauka got destroyed in 213BC and in 212BC.

So far this has been one kick-ass campaign, with great victories and crushing defeats. For the moment I got 4 campaigning legions in Iberia, 1 in Africa and 2 in Italy. Expansion in Iberia is very slow as the Lusotannan field considerable armies, full stacks filled with mercenaries and led by top notch generals.
I already spend many hours on this campaign and will be spending many more... thx EB-team for this awesome game :2thumbsup:

By the 250's carthage can put up a fight in scillily, although a full consular army will wipe them out. I'd wait untill carthage owns most of scillily before expanding that way. But feel free to move slowly north.
Before .81a I had a roman game when I'd done this and shipped a army to greese where it wrecked havoc untill the polbians hit. Back to the mainland.
By that time it the AI was very strong, on vh, h (vh,vh is insanely hard).

I'd have to disagree with that, I'm in the 230's BC and can't seem to make more than 23 000 mnai a turn (though I do have a high mercenary payroll and non-profitable Gallic and African provinces). The Roman army is overpowered because EB is historically accurate, the Romans are supposed to have an edge over their barbaric foes, as they did in history. And I don't find it ridiculously overpowered either, I have suffered my (small) share of humliating, Cannae-level defeats.Quote:

Yeah, that's an interesting map. Surprising Germanic coastal conquests and Parthia is doing as good as can be hoped for given the Seleukid monster.
Casse and Averni are doing extremely well in that game...
I agree. Playing as the Romans isn't too easy, but its definitely not as difficult as, say, Pontus. Yes you have a nice, strong starting economy (as Rome should), but in part that is due to the fact that you have a smaller army than several of your neighbors (due to Pyrrhos' recent invasion, as stated in the preview description). And you should originally expand quickly, as well, since the 270 BC "Year in History" is Rome completeing her hegemony over central and southern Italia. That gives you 24 turns until the 1st Punic War historically breaks out if you try and play by the books. The N Italy settlements are no pushovers and if you play BI exe Epeiros or others will most likely assault you by sea early, further complicating things. But all said, they SHOULD be just a little bit better than most (if not all) of their opponents. I mean, history DOES bear that out, no?:beam:
Income-wise, the highest I've hit is around 75k per turn, but I have 87 provinces atm fueling that economy. I once had 60k earlier, but even then I think I had near 50, including most of Iberia and Gallia. I would say you are doing just spiffy to maintain around a 100k balance while making 20-25k per turn as Romani until you really begin to hit empire stage.
BTW I also concur that that is one VERY interetsing map. Though I think mine has been quite fun as well.
In my Roman game I have Italy, sicaly and Iberia. I have 8 20 stack legions and I have 800,000 in the bank, the year is 215BC. I've had more money than I can spend since turn 15.

While it's true that Rome does have meagre starting forces, this doesn't really bite as much as it might since they have 4 (5?) starting territories and the only faction they have to contend with are the Epiorites (sp?) in Tarentum. You've got eleutheroi settlements with nice fat garrisons to act as buffers between you and anyone else. In short, you can pick and choose your wars and build up your economy. I suppose if you use it with BI, which is supposed to make the AI more agressive with amphibious invasions, Eperios would be more of a pain. Compare that to the Greeks and Macedonians, who have profitable heelenic territories but are at it tooth and nail from the word go with everyone and their mother, or the Gaullic factions who risk getting shredded in the civil war if they demob, Rome does have it pretty cushy.
But on the other hand, the game needs a faction that has a "soft" start to help the player get their head 'round EB, and a historical game is naturally going to portray some of the factors that made Rome so succesful. Not everyone can be Pontos, or being threatened by extermination from the word go would get dull, no?
The thing is - what can be done to make rome just a little tougher for a player, but so that it doesn't hurt the AI expansion of rome? It would be really nice to keep the Romani out of cisalpine gaul for a little longer if possible, but if we put killer garrisons for rebels there, the AI might not expand well.
Someone should try this: make the starting garrisons for those rebel towns tough - not impossible, but reasonably tough. Use descr_strat.txt to do it. Then play as another faction entirely (maybe just casse - just keep hitting end turn) and see how the AI handles it.
As Rome you have enough troops to take all of Italy. Just get rid of your fleet at the start, and put all money into the economy Lets not forget that there is no threat in the North for some time, so just stick all your troops into one bunch and use them.

That way ai rome has it easy, but player rome has it very hard.
I learnt today the value of slingers.. my elite foot infantry were fighting the nudists and going toe to toe. I sent two units of slingers around to ther rears and did what the best heavy infantry couldn't.
I was playing as the Sweboz and i wanted to make sure Rome would last and become powerful so i just bumped up their city bonues considerably and their difficult start help.
They fought off Epieros and united italy easily and expanded into spain.
It was great, i was then able to fight the legions i wanted to.
