I don't know how many of you are following this story, but I've been hearing a lot of "Well, he has the right to say what he wants, first ammendment, blah, blah, blah". Well, its time people start paying for their actions. Sorry, a 2 week suspension and a weak apology is not enough. Now the guy is trying to sound like the victim. I actually agree with the poverty pimp himself, Al Sharpton, that Imus needs to be canned. Whats your opinion?
If the logic were applied equally I would agree but thats hardly the case. Imus shouldnt be fired, just like 50cents shouldnt be sued/penalized everytime he calls someone a ho either.Quote:

It really is a strange bit of business. I don't think Imus should be insulting black women, but it's hard to get angry at him and him alone; the rap business was partially built on insulting and degrading black women, and you don't hear them apologizing. Nor do you hear anyone calling upon them to do so.
As for Sharpton, if you ever catch yourself agreeing with him, just dunk your head in cold water. He never apologized for the race-baiting Tawana Brawley episode, in which he was deeply involved. That was a heck of a lot more hateful than doddering old Imus grumbling about "hos."
If he gets fired the world will keep on turning, and free speech will still be free. It's not really a big deal.

The biggest problem I have is the racial double standard at work. Imus is a comedian, he's a morning talk show shock jock that has made a career out of insensitive remarks and shocking chat. There's a big difference between a comedian known for making fun of anyone and everyone using the term 'nappy headed hos' to get a laugh than say, an evening news anchor using the same term in an off hand remark. On the other hand Dave Chappelle, who was notorious for casting a wide ethnic net, routinely singled out non-black ethnic groups and nobody thought twice about it.
Like Trent Lott Imus was a fool to apologize, let alone agree to go on Sharpton's turf and turn this into a pop culture 'incident'. A quick comeback or tirade using a 'voice of reason' could have diffused the entire situation and made Sharpton look like a bigger phony and fool than he already is. Imus apologizing just made things worse.
I'm sure in the end it will all come down to money. If his show starts losing advertisers or ratings, he will be fired. Is there a replacement show in mind?
Disclaimer: Never heard his show before, so my opinion is worthless (at least to the advertisers...).

Well Dave, over here in communist Europabia we have laws against that sort of thing, but then we also have laws against denying the holocaust, insulting other heads of state (thankfully never applied) and a dozen or so other things. Slightly off-topic, but did anyone see the Daily Show episode recently where they were talking about the N-word? They had John Oliver and Larry Wilmore (the Senior Black Correspondent) doing the "interviews", and Wilmore's job was to actually say the words so Oliver wouldn't get in trouble. Disturbingly hilarious.

There was a thread in here a while ago about a bunch of Texan university students (law students, IIRC) who threw a MLK Day party where they dressed up as pimps, drank Schlitz Malt Liquor out of brown paper bags, and ate fried chicken.
I found the whole idea offensive and racist, and was generally poo-pood by American backroom orgahs.
