Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
There's been talk in tech circles of the groundless and to date, unproven claims made by MS that DX10 can only be implemented within the framework of Vista. We all know that MS needs to find excuses for people to pony up the cash for Vista and by making it the only place where gamers can enjoy DX10 goodness is one way of ensuring its success. Hell, the fact that Halo 3 will sport zero DX10 features and yet is slated to be a 'Vista only' for PCs should tell you about the lengths MS is willing to go.
Well in the face of adversity some clever lad has figured out that it's possible to emulate DX10 on XP using an D3D/OpenGL wrapper.
The project itself...

Here is where I first learned of the project...

So there's the very real possibility this wrapper may not offer maximum compatibility or the best peformance but damn it all, if it keeps me from upgrading when I'm not ready to upgrade I'll give it a shot!
AW: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
The things people do to avoid Vista, heh heh :laugh4:
And you too! Give up, and join the dark side. You cannot resist it. You know it's powerful. You must assimilate. Go, go now(!), and purchase Windows Vista from the powerful hungry Microsoft! *looks upon you with evil soul-penetrating eye*
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
Now we just need some DX10 games to try.
Take that, Microsoft! :medievalcheers:
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
Wouldn't Microsoft prevent release?

What if the outcome is released as a different API -having a different name?
I guess Lame MP3 codec was built the same way, which has been the free Mp3 encoding standard for quite some time, as quality as the original Fraunhofer one.
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
Hello LeftEyeNine,
Possible. But DX10 is supposed to be a sellingpoint for Vista.
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
The DX10 on XP project is in very early days, so I don't know how much of a factor it should be in anyone's decisions.
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
Well, if this project comes to fruition and actually works, i shall be very happy.
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
Waste of time. I'd rather pay for Vista than have a square peg hammered into a round hole.
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
I don't think anyone is operating under the delusion this is the medicine that will cure what ails us. However, the fact that such a thing has come into existence so quickly is encouraging.
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
Not encouraging at all. It's sad, and pathetic. The irational hatred that some people have toward M$ has, officially, goten old. I'm tired of it. This is a symptom of it. I have nothing good to say about it.

Yes, the attempt to port a graphics framework is an act of irrational hatred! How dare they?

Indeed. What a sad, pathetic attempt to get more functionality out of their OS. :inquisitive:

Best of luck to them, I say. They've certainly got their work cut out for them. :sweatdrop:
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
They could charge money for that, they have a lot of work and a huge potential customer base of people who don't want Vista.:2thumbsup:

Its not that I hate MS, I just don't want to be forced to upgrade from something I'm comfortable with.
Besides I'm a cheapskate...

Noone forces you yet, you won't get the benefits of DX10 without an appropriate graphicscard anyway, I just hope noone forces you to upgrade your old, comfortable graphicscard in order to benefit from DX10...:sweatdrop:

Ignoring that, I bought a graphics card that supports DX10 because it was much faster than my old one- not because of DX10 support. What does Vista get me other than DX10 support?
Of course, I mean features that I actually want- it has lots that I don't want. ~;p
Re: Behold... the DX10 on XP Project!!!
Best of luck to those trying to get DX10 working on XP, personally I won't be buying Vista at all. There is no way I would buy a new OS just to be able to use a new graphics API. If DX10 is the main selling point for Vista then M$ must be in desperation.

Now that I read about the Halo 2 "feature" of installing while you play, I don't really want that either, it's not like I want Halo 2, but I'm concerned that other games will pick that up. The installation is often the only phase where I have a look into the manual etc, I want that to be seperate, but some people don't even seem to have time for that anymore.
And concerning DX10, I have it, but not the hardware to support it so erm, dunno, getting a new card to replace my 7950GT seems a bit much asked for now, the added performance does not justify the high price yet IMO.
