Re: Why can't I reconcile?
You should be able to get reconciliation when either your king or the pope dies (as long as you're not at war with the papacy or the faction that the new pope comes from)
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
You can't reconcile until a) Your current leader dies or B) the current pope dies.
(P.s. Ally with the pope. Pay him regular tribute to keep him happy. That way anyone who attacks you gets excommed and you can crusade their ass. The pope is a great way to take over catholicdom. Any time you caease hostilities wait and then resume after. If your rep is high enough you can even disobey pope once without excomm.)
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
I say if your faction leader isn't an uber general or has some awesome ancillaries or traits, send him off by himself to the nearest rebel stack and go kill him which should make the pope reconcile you after you get a new faction leader
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
To reconcile you have to pay the pope a lot of money. The cheapest I ever got it was about 10000 when playing as Denmark.
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
The Popeness attacked me, in my current Venice campaign, and I was thusly excommed for the entire game. I finally decided to try and get reconciled with about 30 turns to go, and it cost me 100,000 florins, plus six territories. Yes, the Pope really disliked me. :0
In all of my other Catholic games, I do as others have mentioned and give him handj...well, pay him a lot and keep him happy. That way I never have to deal with reconciliation. This Venice camp is actually the only one I've been excommed in, I think, outside of the original MTW.

And while your at it, build nothing but priest from one place and try like hell to get the Theology guild and become pope as often as you can. That will also help with the thing that Moah said above.
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
I reconciled with the Pope without needing to kill off my king.
Send him a diplomat. Reconciliation is an option on the diplomacy screen, but it won't be accepted unless you have a high relationship.
I bribed my way to "Perfect" relations, asked for a reconciliation, and paid the "indulgence". Off I went, a happy member of Christianity again.
I figure it cost me in the neighborhood of about 12,000 Fl all told, but I was losing more than that every turn in disrupted taxation.
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
I was able to reconcile by gifting 1000 each turn to the Pope for about 4 or 5 turns and then building nothing but churches in all my cities. The option to reconcile came up in the list and I offered one of my minor cities and 4800. :smiley2:
Plus, our relations became "perfect" and anyone attacking me would suffer the wrath of the Pope!
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
I attacked Rome and killed the pope once. Work fine in getting reconciled. It was a glorious feeling to see the little bastard all alone on the battlefield trying to outrun horse archers.
Once he died all was good again.

Been allied for 35 turns and really made no difference playing HRE. Milan and venice constantly sieging something every turn. Both have 6-8 points with the pope but neither seem to get excommed. In fact everytime i sally out and slaughter their puny peasant based army it seems to go against me and my own standing takes a dive.??

How many cardinals do you have compared to them?

That shouldn't matter. There's too many wars for the pope to interfere in every one. But when he does...
When he warns you to stop fighting, say Milan then he warns them too. If they keep fighting then they get excommed.
NOTE: Whoever is attacking is punished. Not defending. So you can sally, but you can't besiege. Your cities count from the turn the warning was given: If Milan take a city, you besiege it to get it back next turn then the pope says stop fighting then you can't take it back.
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
It could of his enemies' cardinals outnumber his own..
Suppose they influence papal policy making the Papa look unfavourably your faction while ignoring the shortcomings of your enemies..?
(I proposed this in this thread, https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=83610, but as it went unanswered and I don't have the time or skills to search through the descr files I was just wondereing if my game was a coincidence or that the CoC actually holds a lot of power)
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
You might be right, but I'd be more inclined to think that it's more symptomatic of papal favour in general, as factions that the pope likes will have more cardinals than those he dislikes...
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
This is really irritating. I am killing the pope every turn for the last at least 6. I dont understand why im not reconsiled.
I have taken on everyone and ignored the pope from the very begining and at one point had some serious crusades against me. I cant be bothered with all my citizens being upset the whole time so I thought id just kill the pope everytime I wanted to take out another faction.
Does the pope have to control at least one region or what? The damn fool can get out and stay out of Rome as far as im concerned.
Funny the list of cardinals is really short cause there just arent any priests to get upgraded...
Re: Why can't I reconcile?
it might help if you stop killing the pope, I think you by now after killing 6+ popes and taking rome and killing several catholic factions, may not have alot of choices aside from giving back rome and giving a large cash settlement, and killing off your current leader for good measure.
"This is really irritating. I am killing the pope every turn for the last at least 6. I dont understand why im not reconsiled."
I think that question/statement answers itself ;) :D

Indeed, at this stage just stay away from catholicism, make friend with the muslims and the orthodox, and wipe out the remaining catholic factions :saint:. If you can keep your cities under control, which is a bit harder, but not that hard, its a fun way to victory.
