Have you ever met a rabbit that has no fear?

I ask that because we have a furry footed ravenous friend among us. Day before last I went to the back yard to inspect my garden (growing some stuff to help supplement summer BBQs :2thumbsup: ) . Being the eagle eyed hunter that I am I immediately noticed two rabbits that were dangerously close to my fresh organic (*cough*LemurBeruit) produce.

Well the fat tasty looking one sped off as soon as he saw me, the smaller one (less than a year old) did so as well for a couple feet then stopped. This little guy stops, looks at me, than promptly resumes munching not 20 feet from me. So I think, “What the hell, might as well fatten them up a little and I have plenty to spare."

During the course of my weeding I notice the brave little bugger edging closer to me and my 3x20’ of munchables, casually as ever. Not only did he approach to within 10 feet of me but he had the audacity to clean his face while looking at me. Of course I first thought: “Hmm, I’ll call you appetizer” but then I realized what a cheeky fellow this was. Not only did he not take off with pappa/mamma when he had the chance but he had absolutely no fear.

That’s when I decided to let him live, he amuses me. If I find the coward that took off and left him alone, I’ll have to loosen my belt when I’m done with him. :medievalcheers:

TIM: Too late!

ARTHUR: What, behind the rabbit?
TIM: It is the rabbit!
ARTHUR: You silly sod! You got us all worked up!
TIM: Well, that's no ordinary rabbit. That's the most foul,
cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on.
ROBIN: You tit! I soiled my armor I was so scared!
TIM: Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide, it's
a killer!
???: Get stuffed!
TIM: It'll do you a trick, mate!
???: Oh, yeah?
ROBIN: You monkey's scot's get!
TIM: I'm warning you!
ROBIN: What's he do, nibble your bum?
TIM: He's got huge, sharp-- he can leap about-- look at the

ARTHUR: Go on, Boris. Chop his head off!

ROBIN: Would it help to confuse it if we run away more?

Nice story. The brazen bunny's defiant act might also be the result of having zero negative experiences with human beings. Combine that with your non-threatening moves and you can see why it decided to stick around. Do us a favor and take some pics next time!

Speaking of brazen wildlife...

There is a family of squirrels that inhabit my neck of the woods and can be seen flitting about in the backyards of all my neighbors on my block. Brazen little buggers, the entire lot. They must be the descendants of some psycho squirrel I recall from my youth. Their great great great grandpappy was extremely territorial and openly took exception to everything but humans. I remember seeing grandpappy squirrel chase birds like there was no tomorrow, scrambling out to the thinnest of branches to so he could kick them off his property. This was a sore spot with me because once in a blue moon a Blue Jay, Cardinal or Robin (very rare in the big city) would land in our bushes and psycho grandpappy would proceed to chase them away. I suppose this is normal behavior for a squirrel but our former tenants told me about a time when they saw psycho pappy go after a rather large stray cat! Psycho pappy was traveling along the top of a fence and spied the cat lazing around below. Pappy squirrel opened with a pre-emptive airborne assault, right onto the back of the cat! The cat flipped out and ran like hell, we never saw him in our yard again.

There are a significant number of rabbits residing near where I live. The survival of one generation has allowed them to become a common sight. No one really bothers them, so they tend to hang out in the front yards of people's houses on occasion. They make a little bit of a mess, but nothing too serious. I think that hunting is illegal on the grounds where I live, so no one is going to start blasting away at them, especially when there's a chance they might hit a child by accident.

That's exactly why I'm going to start practicing with the forearm sized crossbow I have. 80 lbs draw weight.

Generally its a rabbit habbit that scared rabbit don't run but stay and absolutely don't move.
Of course crazed rabbit is an option too.

Fearless rabbits eventually end up on the menu for the host of neighborhood predators (cats, dogs, hawks, coyotes...). During this past winter the bunnies have taken a toll on my rose bushes. Fortunately the snow was so deep that the bark they stripped off was 2-3 feet from the base of the bushes, so a little pruning and no damage done. First time they have ever bothered those roses so they must have been desperately hungry.

This is the time of year in my area when the first baby bunnies are born. At work yesterday we watched momma bunny defend her nest of little ones from 2 marauding crows. The crows would hop in close and Big Momma would go right after them, striking them with her front paws. After about 10 minutes they gave up. First time I've ever seen a rabbit do that.

When they fight (NOT their preferred tactic) they fight rather like cats do.

Yeah Seamus, I've seen rabbit vs rabbit duke it out as you describe. I've never seen them take on a predator like that. Usually they freeze and hope their natural camoflage works or run, and in this case, lead the predator away from the nest. Wish I had a camera, it was pretty cool.

Being nice to wild animals only gets them killed because eventually they run into a not-so-nice person. Can't bring myself to kill them, though, I just make some noise so they go away. I don't kill critters over bushes, gardens and knocked over trash cans because its not that big of a deal to me.

Well the momma rabbit probably made the judgement that the two crows were of body mass roughly equal to hers, and so confrontation was a viable option. I read somewhere that wild animals (and humans) make this judgement automatically whenever presented with a threat.
