Best thing you ate today
I hate it when these threads die.
Pork filled siopao

Makes me miss Sydney a little, where I was a couple weeks ago, eating Yum Cha (not that they'd serve siopao there, but whatever) every other day. Wish they made it like that here :embarassed:

Re: Best thing you ate today
Wrong day for this thread, for me. Restarted my diet today so not much. Yesterday was a travelling day. Last good meal I had was Friday night, when we had pork tenderloin at my parents' house.

Re: Best thing you ate today
A cheese and shredded capicolla omlet with rye toast and a big glass of tomato juice. Those dumplings look good, would that be barbeque pork filling? drool

Re: Best thing you ate today
Of course, Hosakawa! Took forever to find at the asian grocery today, had them hidden behind all the sweet red bean ones.

Agree, Friday night was better: Yaki Udon and some other plates.

Re: Best thing you ate today
Chees&Onion pie followed by apple crumble. Good to be home, however briefly!

Folornly looks down at his supper, two cold slices of pizza
I can't remember the last time I had those delicious dumplings. It's siopao and spinach gulay for dinner tomorrow. My favorite meal when deployed to the Philippines oh so many years ago.

Re: Best thing you ate today
Had chicken tandoori today, that tandoori marinade is so good!
Yes yes, I know it's probably a cheap commercial knock-off and nothing like the "real indie thing", but it's still darn good.

Re: Best thing you ate today
It's the end of term so I'm running on fumes. All I've had today is some cereal, a bacon sandwich and an economy pizza.

a) Which Yum Cha.
b) Yum Cha is better with large numbers of people... :balloon2:

Re: Best thing you ate today
toasted pan-salted bread with thick melty cheddar, a little butter and fluffy eggs on top.

Re: Best thing you ate today

Re: Best thing you ate today
Some Sri Lankan cuisine over at my friend's house. Looks and tastes exceedingly similar to my familiar Thai cuisine, which I positively hate. Considering its only competition today is some toast with butter-and-jam in the morning it's sort of a win, but not really.
Ah well. Off to another meal with me then. :balloon:

Re: Best thing you ate today
Ham and cheese omelette with Hollandaise sauce, potatos, toast and coffee.
No lunch.
Cheeseburgers off the BBQ, beer, and chocolate chip cookies.

My gawd. 6,000 miles away, I had the exact same thing! Minus the cookies.
Nevertheless, I envy Prollie's menu... can't say I've had the pleasure.

Re: Best thing you ate today
Hmm, never had a lot of the things you guys are talking about, like Siapao and Yum Cha. We don't get as much diversity here in the middle of nowhere. Pretty much its a lot of sports bars and mexican restaurants.
Hmm, I suppose the best thing I had today was a ground turkey meat burger. Ground turkey is quite excellent, imo. It works especially well on my Foreman grill.

I'll find out and get back to ya, just remember it was in Black Town. Pretty seedy area and finding parking was a consistent ordeal, but the shark fin dim sum was sooo worth it. My other favorite was the rice noodle thing (forget the name). It was a long and flat noodle with two big prawns inside that they'd serve with a dousing of soy sauce that was fantastic.

Hating Thai food?! My God, utter blasphemy. To be honest, I didn't like it much as a child, but mainly because I kept ordering curries and the coconut milk based ones sit terribly in my stomach. Have you tried some of the more simple dishes like pad thai or glass noodle salad? Those are the Thai dishes that won me over and now I'm hooked.

The great thing about siopao is that a drunken alzheimer's patient could make it. If you have any of those Asian groceries around you that are spreading like wild fire in northern Virginia, you can just ask for the steamed sweet buns (like Hosa knows, get the barbqued pork!) and you will get what you're looking for. There you can get a steamer basket* usually for a few dollars, and you just boil a pot of water, put the basket on top, and let the buns steam for 10 minutes or so. The directions say you can microwave them too, but they're prolly not as soft and moist that way.

Don't take the Mexican food for granted! While in Australia, I had prolly the best Thai, Chinese, and Indian food I've ever had, but their Mexican food is downright awful. Seems strange that such a simple cuisine could be done wrong, but believe me, you couldn't get a satisfactory enchilada down there for your life.

Home-made Jambalaya (chef is a south Jersey Italian girl who can really cook), and blood orange sorbet for dessert.

Re: Best thing you ate today
A good old-fashioned cheeseburger with steak fries; the hamburger patty was grilled to perfection.
The best part? It was free. ~D

Re: Best thing you ate today
Left over roast beef sandwichs. Though I haven't had dinner yet.

Re: Best thing you ate today
Lamb chops [marinated in garlic, oil & rosmary marinated 24h] of the grill with some coriander/parsley yoghurt dip. Serves with rice & tomato salad. And good old micro-brewery Bavarian beer.~
Lovely feature: had it with a good looking & fun lady who knows to value a good meal!!!
Well, it was last Friday, but still.....

Come on, my brother, how can you live without the cookies?
Now, if you finished the day with a lovely shot of single barrel bourbon, as did I, then I'd say we are truly grooving in the ether of a symbiotic existence. :beatnik2:

Re: Best thing you ate today
True bread with Comté, Morbier, Lomont and Edel de Cléron, with a glass of ligh red Bourgogne. Bread, cheese and wine, a poet's meal.

Re: Best thing you ate today
Two pieces of toast with marmite.
I WAS going to have the last pain au chocolate, but la petite assassin (age 2) said she wanted it, and then didn't eat it. She did, however, manage to scrunch it up enough so no one else wanted it.
Lunch is not shaping to be all that much better either.
On the other hand last night I made my secret chicken, cabbage, chick pea and tarragon stew. :2thumbsup: , if I do say so myself.
Is it just me or do those siopao look like dinosaur eggs?
