Chapter One

San Juan Hill was a hell storm of arrows, javelins, and spears. Sheik Jalaf had to admit he was lucky the Toledo garrison had charged down hill after his skirmishers had retreated. It enabled him to hit them hard and drive them up the hill and even now his men were riding to the top of the hill over the enemies dead bodies.

"Forth men, take prisoners for ransom. Many widows, sisters, and mothers will need compensation for their husbands, sons, and brothers death. Their camp belongs to you."

Many of the Enemy were surrendering now. Abbail his second in command turned to him. "My lord, do you wish for me to secure the enemy's camp now?"

"Yes do so. Atarik send a message to the Sultan informing him of our victory. Eryin, tell Captain Jamil that Teshiks men will join him after the fight since he is dead." He ordered.

He received salutes from each of them as they rode off. He had started this fight with 40 retainers, one had been injured in the clash. His force had composed of two Desert Cavalry squadrons commanded by Captain Derek and Captain Yopol each with 80 men. Derek lost 43 of his men and Yopol had 9 dead.

He also had three Arab Cavalry Squadrons each consisting of 80 men, commanded by Captain Jamil who had 51 men alive, the late Captain Teshiks with 39 survivors, and Captain Arden with 64 survivors.

He had captured 269 men, including Prince Rodrigo. The ransom would be over 9,000 Florins. The camp yielded 400 Camp Followers for the slave markets.

The Sultan would be pleased.

Dismounting he oversaw the clean up of the bodies by the prisoners. The Toledo dead were dumped into a mass grave, while his men were buried with honors. His first command and he had victory. He was only 16.

Chapter Two

Zahra finished Jalaf's letter. "Fatima, Jalaf is returning."

"When will he be back?" Her friend asked.

"In two days. He just finished ransoming back all the prisoners he captured."

"Well then are all the wedding preparations done then?" Fatima asked as she laid back on the couch so she could breastfeed her daughter in comfort.

"Yes. Though I won't be leaving the city for his estate until Toledo has been captured. He just doesn't think its safe to raise a Family there at the moment."

"Well if the rumors are true that the Saharan Army is being recalled, that might not be a problem come next year."

"But didn't they just conquered Timbuktu?"

"Yes and the money gained enabled us to hire several tribes to our cause. My Husband is sending them into Valencia to draw the Spanish out."

"Should he be telling you this in bed?"

"Oh no, I overheard this without his knowing." Fatima switched her daughter to her other breast. "By the way do you wish to go shopping tomorrow with me? I need more material for my younger sister's dress for the wedding."

"Yes of course."

...On the Road to Cordoba...

Jalaf was riding at the head of his troops when he spotted the herald coming up the road. "Salam Herald, what news do you bring!" He shouted.

"The Sultan has a message for you sir!"

"Then come friend."

The herald came forward and read his message. "You have proved yourself. Can anyone deny it? Have a gift for you. My gift is great. Daughter Zahra sends her love."

Jalaf grinned, to those in the know, the sultan had sent a coded message of 'You can have my daughter.' Though not in line for the throne, he was definitely not far from it.
