From gamespot: As we mentioned, Medieval can support up to 15,000 soldiers on a single battlefield, and a maximum of eight different player-controlled armies can do battle at one time. What's more, you can set as many of those armies as you wish to be computer-controlled AI opponents and conduct epic joint battles with human or computer-controlled allies.

Looks like a good on-line exercice tool to practice your skills, help out a new recruit or practice team battles.
The AI will never be at par as a good human player but could be fun to play WITH a friend against 6 other AI controlled armies on-line.

Including the AI online is a very good idea.

AI would be usefull if you want to play a fried but dont want other people involved. You could still have a 4v4.
