Red Orchestra Summer Assault Starts Now

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New maps, increased player limits, 10 free days of play for friends, plus 20% off list price
Tripwire Interactive today released a major update for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, the award-winning WWII online action game. For current owners, the updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. Those who purchase the game before June 11 will save an additional 20% off the $19.95 list price.
The update includes:
Ten new maps, all winning entries in Tripwire's Custom Map Competition. Highlights include:
“Smolensk Stalemate”: the contest winning map features perfectly balanced to-and-fro infantry combat through ruined villages and trenches in August 1943.
“Leningrad”: features close-quarters infantry fighting in the ruined streets of the city, above them in the bombed-out buildings and deep beneath them in the sewers, all with close-in armor support.
“Berezina”: the After-Hourz team surpass themselves on this rural/village map, introducing not just a new vehicle (the Russian BT-7 light tank), but also the first functional anti-tank gun in the game. To cap it off, the BT-7 even carries tank-riders.
“Black Day July”: one of the very best for tank combat fans, set in the rolling countryside around Prokhorovka as German and Russian armor clash en masse during the Battle of Kursk.
Increased multiplayer count. A new level of intensity with 50+ player multiplayer battles (up from the previous limit of 32).
New community made content, including the Russian BT-7 light tank with infantry tank riders and the first player controllable anti-tank gun in the game.
New soundtrack: The “Orchestra” comes to the Ostfront - the game now features a complete in-game soundtrack from composer Matthew Burns.
Gameplay enhancements. The addition of several features requested by the clan/ladder/league community to enhance competitive play.
To give gamers a chance to try the updated version of one of the best sellers on Steam, Tripwire is offering both retail and Steam customers two free Steam Guest Passes. All owners of Red Orchestra can invite friends to try the game with no obligation to purchase. Upon receiving and activating the Steam Guest Pass, the invited friend has ten days of Red Orchestra play available for free.
I'm still downloadin, I'll probably be done by tommorow, but I hope all of you all get off BF and get on RO!!

Thats alot of new content. I liked RO but it seems to me Id have to join a clan to get the real team/coop experience, and I'm not one for clans. I've been playing ARMA alot lately which imo, is easier to find a real coop/team play server.
But I still have my copy of RO, maybe I'll go back to it one day =)

If anyone has Steam and wants to try it, I can give them a pass. It'll let you play for free for a week or 10 days or something.

Red Orchestra is the main blame for my recent bad grades at school.
I simply love this superb FPS.

Hey, I'd like that. I guess you'll need my e-mail adress? Or how does it work?

RO is a fantastic game.
I played it during one of their free weekends and was just sold.
The graphics may not be the best but in gameplay it has it all.

Anyone who wants a guest pass just give me a PM. ~:)

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
Tried it out yesterday (thanks Alexander!!!) and it is great fun! Tried the RO based on UT2003 a long time ago and didn't like that so much, but this new version is awesome!
Feels a bit like America's Army set in WWII but much more realistic :laugh4: Was shocked when I reloaded one of the rifles and it took me like 20 seconds! :inquisitive: :laugh4:
And at under $16 on Steam this is a bargain! :2thumbsup:

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
More than a bargain. It's one of the best FPS out there! :beam:
-
Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
Just purcahsed.. at $16 I thought "what the heck"... :laugh4:
Note the normal price is $20, it is on discount on Steam until June 11..

Forget about your personal life for the next 1-2 weeks. You wont want anything else than RO. Not even porn, not even women, not even beer or whisky, no friends, just shoot the sniper that comes into your scope.

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
Scopes? You wimp. Ironsights, like a real man. :2thumbsup:
-
Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
Ah yes, ironsights and fully authentic weaponry. My favourite recipe. :2thumbsup:
Favourite weapon anyone? I like the STG44 the most. Perfect recoil. Second comes the PPSh 41 SMG. Superb firepower.

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
Eh, either a G41, K98, or Mosin Nagant. The more bullets per clip, the less I seem to hit anything. I'm most accurate with bolt-actions but I get about the same about of kills with semis.

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
I've never played this game, so bear with me here:
Is this game teamwork centered, or isn't it - does one need to capture a flag or something like that?
Is this game infantry centered, or does this simply depend on the map one plays? How realistic is the infantry combat ?
Is that nice free-playing pass also available for those without steam?
:balloon2:

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
You need to get Steam. Just a nice 1.5MB program. And the game is about 1.8GB.
It's teamwork centered, and you need to get some strategic points on the map, which need at least 4-5 guys to get, not just one. Some maps are only infantry, and some maps only tank, because they are very large.

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
Been playing... Graphics are a little dated, but not bad... Levels can be huge (for a shooter)...
the 50 player servers are awesome... Battles can be spectacular with tanks and infantry and fixed AT guns and artillery and tracer fire everwhere...
So far so good...

Battles are won by capturing or defending objectives, which requires your team to have more people than the enemy around the objective. It can require a lot of teamwork to do this, especially if you need to deal with tanks and obstacles as well as infantry and machine guns. You can't do it all yourself.

The game is more infantry centered than vehicle, but that is largely map-dependent. There are three kinds of maps - infantry-only, tank-only, and combined arms. The first two are self-explanatory, but in CA maps, infantry tend to be more important than tanks, that is, objectives can be accomplished in spite of the best efforts of tankers. Which makes sense. Tank support makes it much easier for ground-pounders, though.
The combat itself, while limited in realism (it is a computer game) is the most accurate game available except Armed Assault or Operation Flashpoint. It's in some ways similar to those games.

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
In terms of weaponry - it's all about the Stg44 in close in maps, the Kar98 Scoped in wider maps, and the moible artillery piece in tank maps.
(N.B. Ironsights are for numbnuts who can't afford a proper sighting unit)

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
STG44 is great! Remember you can switch fire to semi-auto with it. So far I haven't seen anyone use an AT-Gun.

You're kidding. What have you been playing? RO BETA 0.1?
-
Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
K98 is the best imo, if youve got a fast connection. :beam:

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
edyz - I can't think of a more realistic infantry combat game other than those two. Care to drop some names?
And I got to be sniper yesterday. Couldn't hit anything, so I gave it up. Then got to sniping with my Mosin and got some very nice long range kills. :laugh4:

Sniper is sweet... Just got to adjust for bullet drop. It really helps if you are prone with the weapon in a supported position...
You are right, the dymanic between SMGs, MGs and rifles has been tweaked just so that all weapons rule their own niche. There are no bad weapons so far in my experience, just the wrong weapon for the job at hand...
-
Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
I also got the full version, great game! Still learning how to play mostly so I can't really say what my favorite weapon is... although I mostly prefer just a simple rifle!
I can allready tell this is gonna cost me a lot of my spare time!!! :laugh4:

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
One of the more amusing sessions I've had entailed that map with the trench system being assaulted by the Russians. I was running around like a loon with the Stg44 causing merry havoc.

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
I guess it might be a per server kind of thing, but I have notice people can get a bit peaved if you jump in a tank with them... Didn't have that issue on BF2...

Yeah, it's the BF2 syndrome.
People don't like it when you get into the same tank as them since they know you will screw up and get both of you killed like not stopping when you need to stop etc.
That's why pretty much all tanks only got 1 guy in them.
If there is 2 then the 2nd one man the machine gun thus doesn't affect the driver/gunner.
Personally I do exactly the same.
So many times have I had a co-pilot who don't shoot at the enemy or keep driving even tho I'm yelling him to stop. There is only so much of that you can take before you go solo.
Anyway, my favorite weapon is on average the rifle(mauser/mosin). It's just fits most of the time. Even on close combat maps you can get a nice amount of kills with a rifle(as long as you know how to use it of course).
But I wouldn't say no to the sniper rifles or the Stg44.
Also if you can find the prime spot, the MG42. Nothing is more fun then just opening up fire with that one and just watch the russians fall like bowling pins.

Re: Red Orchestra Update, A great incentive to start playing again or get the game!
If you're on a good server, with good people, you can tank well with others. Usually on a public server this isn't possible.
