Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Does anyone else on this board play Battle of Wesnoth? It's this week's bomb for me.
I discovered this little gem when I was looking for free online shooters and strat games and perused the invaluable Freeware sticky. Wesnoth is a sort of mixture of chess (which to my mind is still the mother of all games) and Knights & Merchants (which wasn't very intelligent and is really outdated now). It's amazingly smart for such a small doanload package (available for nearly all OS types and specs) and the gameplay is both funny and intriguing because tactics and playability clearly come before graphics.
It has a full multiplayer panel, but I haven't come round to that part yet and I don't even know if there are any servers running out there. Right now I am appropriating the mechanics and tactics of the game. But I am going to play it with my kids this weekend and hopefully we can set up some games between our two home PC's. It looks pretty easy to create a local server, even create new maps. It's all free, open source, open minds -- even the cheats are openly listed in the manual -- and they have a very active user forum.

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Fun game. Downloaded it and played the first campaign. Thanks for making the thread.

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
The game sounds great, but me not being much of a computer technician, can someone explain the install? Or provide a decent link to an explanation?
I've got the source code, unzipped it, and now what? I've got to compile it, right?

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Mine was just a setup file that I saved to my desktop so I can't help you.

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Just installed it and started to play the tutorial - looks like a nice crossbreed between Fantasy General and Age of Wonders.
Good find, Adrian

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
I'm about three or four levels into the second campaign. This is addicting.
-
Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
I've been playing it on again/off again for quite awhile now. Compared to many games available, it's quite well done. For an open-source and totally free game, it's really amazing. :2thumbsup:

Isn't it? Three a.m. last night. :dozey:
It is now past twelve and I am restarting my third campaign time after time.
Because I bleeping can't win! :wall: ~D
Oh well. I've seen that Wesnoth multiplay is alive and kicking. And you can download a truck full of alternative campaign scenarios from their forum site as well.
By the way, gentlemen, as it says in the sticky we have the honourable member ChaosLord to thank for this great find. Or strangle, as you wish..

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Fun game. I've known about it for some time. I'll have to check what they have added with the more recent versions.

I'm fighting the undead, and their extremely hard to kill. Unless you have some magic units.

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Very interesting game with many twists. The day and night cycle, the importance of terrain and strongholds, the unit diversity and the importance of experience make for a great game.
Tip of th week: Try to fight the Undead at night with piercing weapons :book:

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
I found a Mage of Light to be quite effective against undead. They can devastate them with arcane damage, radiate an aura of daylight and cure adjacent units. :2thumbsup:

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
The Mage of Light is the cornerstone of any campaign, especially against the evil and especially against the evil undead. Still I prefer to go with one or two Red Mages for the Great Mage
The Heavy Infantry is nice, but sooo slow - very bad in a fluid battle in difficult terrain...,

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Good observations all round. Here is one of my own. If you don't turn down your loudspeakers, your inmates are going to be mightily irritated by the fighting loops.

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
This is ridiculously difficult. And immensely enjoyable. Thanks for the link, Adrian.
Anyone up for some multiplayer?

I just won the Elensefar battle (in Hero Mode, which is Medium) without a Wite Mage! :2thumbsup:
I had one toward the end though, but I didn't really need him. He took care of some undead skulls which my Elfs would have bashed in anyway.
Every time, the hardest part for me is the levelling up of my leading character. Whether he be Deoran, Konrad or someone else. They have such fragile health that you have to bring them in at juuuust the right moment to make that essential kill.
One teensy weensy mistake and it's SMACKITY! SMACK! "Urrghhh.." :skull:

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Does anyone know how to download add-ons? Everytime I click the get add-ons button it waits a while then says remote host disconnected, could someone please tell me how to do this? Ans I know the first question you guys will ask is "Are you connected to the net?" and the answer is yes, I try it when I am online.

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
It shouldn't be any more complicated than that. Their server may have been down temporarily, or you may be behind a firewall that is preventing the game from communicating with their server.
The server you should be trying to connect to is campaigns.wesnoth.org, I believe. Make sure that is the adress shown in the screen where it asks you for the server to connect to.

Ok, you were right about the server because I was able to get some add-ons this morning but now I have another problem. How do I get the add-ons to
work, as I said I got a couple of them but they don't show up in the campaign list or multiplayer. And i'd also like to know how to get something called Extended eras?

I had the same server issue yesterday. The problem was at their end, not yours (or mine). Probably a temporary thing anyway.
My add-ons all work fine. I can't beat them so far, but that is another matter :wall:
Don't know about the Extended Eras. Aren't those MP maps? Maybe they are add-ons to MP maps which you have to download first. Just my two cts.
KA-PLUNK!

How did you get the add-ons to work or did they just automatically work?

Yeah, like Swiss watches, the same way as the campaigns you get with the original download. I have no idea what your problem could be, but the Wesnoth forum has a large tech assist section and it is active. Give it a try?

Re: Anyone else play Wesnoth?
Just installed it and played the tutorial and the first two mission of the first campaign. Fun Game ! Reminds me a lot of Fire Emblem (which from what I've seen so far is still slightly superior). too bad ranged attacks don't mean you can attack from a hexagonal away though, archers feel kind of useless so far.
EDIT: Do any of the included or extra campaign allow you to play the bad guys ? Orcish or undead invaders ? That could be a whole lot of fun...
