what's the deal with characters in stacks?
I have looked through these boards but didn't find a thread about this, if it's been posted before I'm sorry:(
What's the benefits of having say, a priest in a generals army stack? or a spy, or whatever?
Generally, is it "worth" it?
I just recently noticed it was possible, and havent begun experimenting.
advice would be appreciated.

Well Spy keeps your line of sight bigger, and i think keeping priest or other agent prevented turning to rebellion somehow, not sure if this is proven fact.
Re: what's the deal with characters in stacks?
Doesn't bringing an assassin along increase the resilience of your captain or general to assassination?
Re: what's the deal with characters in stacks?
no, but i believe having a spy with your general does.....since i've seen the AI have Assassins with generals and that didn't even slow down some of my half decent assassins, but a spy on the other hand seemed to throw success % down to as low as 5%...... purely my observation though
Re: what's the deal with characters in stacks?
Well, when you attach the assassin you hear something like "keeping a watchful eye..." I figured that there would be some counter-assassin effect (and I suppose there is, since once my hypothetical spy reveals an AI assassin my guy can go after him). The priest is supposed to eliminate (or reduce) the chance of rebellion, much like the commisars in Soviet armed units.
Re: what's the deal with characters in stacks?
To the best of my knowledge, keeping a spy with your general should reduce his chances of being assassinated.

Having priests around will gradually increase piety, which helps keep your generals from suffering from carbonization, a rather nasty medieval disease contracted from inquisitors.
I believe assassins and spies both reduce the chance of successful spy/assassin missions against your stacks.

Yes, an impious general can make an ash of himself.
