It's not mine. Better edit.

Re: The Poor are Degenerate
Karl Marx, ladies and gentleman. Here for your enjoyment through the week, 2 shows a night, three on Friday and Saturday.
It is one way of looking at socio-economic class and distribution of wealth. It presupposes the following: 1) that all people are entitled to equal standards of living, regardless of their own drive & talents, not just equal opportunity 2) that religion is a cynical con-game, paid by a shadowy elite, known as 'the rich' that pay the religious leaders to make their propaganda points 3) that all that are poor or disadvantaged are somehow victims of an oppressive system that runs on an engine fueled by human misery.
In short, it's hogwash.
My short-form rebuttal (long form would be pages and pages) 1) if I work harder than my co-worker, I am entitled to be rewarded for it; to say otherwise is to mandate mediocrity. 2) This theory completely avoids the tough economical stances most main-line churches have taken with regards to poverty and the role of social services in a just society (the Catholic Church has recently declared that the United States has no right to keep ANYBODY on the Mexican side of the border 3) Poverty is a natural condition, but it's not a foreone conclusion that the individuals that are poor must remain that way.
If you run a race, somebody has to come in last. If some people in the race are walking, sure, they're always going to be last. If they decide they're tired of always losing and start exerting themselves, amazingly enough, they discover that they've left the rear and joined the main body of finishers. Keep working extra hard at it, or discover that they have a natural talent for it, amazingly enough, they keep moving up in the ranks.

I for one cant wait until humans evolve to a society where money is useless. I cant wait to see how angry the corporate greed-monger capitalists become then. This idea of competition is banal and primitive. Theres no reason 'everyone' can't win.

This is the only part of your statement that I even remotely agree with. Capitalism is the only way to ensure that this continues to happen. A 'downtrodden and victimized' plebian today, with their government checks and their 48" flat panel LCD television with HD satellite signals live a damn sight better than even royalty did only 100 years ago.
Re: The Poor are Degenerate
theres a difference though. private enterprise, of course, is good. insatiable consumerism, of course, is evil.
Re: The Poor are Degenerate
I work in an A&E department. I see daily the out of work drug users, the alcoholics and the teenagers who are on their 3rd or so kid - possibly in care. Often they come in by ambulance as after all it's free. They are frequently abusive and as a rule have nothing wrong with them.
Defend them if you will, but they are scum sucking life and money out of the country.
The "poor" in the UK aren't starving. They aren't (usually) homeless. They have free schools, free healthcare (and they use if one hell of a lot more than others do) and use up far more police time with their "high jinks".
Everyone can win. It will involve more people working at school, not breeding as early as they do and not drowning their live in drugs and ethanol.

From How Not to be Poor
Quote:
There is a strong correlation between poverty and certain behaviors. Thus one solution to the problem of poverty is to encourage young Americans to avoid behavior that will tend to lead them into poverty. Specifically, there are four choices young Americans can make that are more likely than any government welfare program to keep them out of poverty and on the road to a productive and prosperous life: (1) finish high school, (2) stay married, (3) get a full-time job and (4) if a woman, don't have children before age 20.
Re: The Poor are Degenerate
I think that the statement quoted at the start of this topic is a load of garbage.
In the case of the third world the vast majority are not "responsible" for their relative poverty, and so we should so all we can to help them improve by involving them in the global economy - give them a decent paying job.
The whole general tilt of that statement seems to be pretty much standard for the sort of tripe that anti-globalist campaigners come out with, but focussed on a different subject area than the norm. other than that the same self-satisfied nonsense.
Re: The Poor are Degenerate
Personally, I didn't see the essay as a religious bashing - but, as pointing out how some justify why there are poor and why they deserve to be poor.
Granted education is a key to improving the living conditions of those born into poverty. However, one need only visit a school in (say) SouthCentral L.A. and realize the insurmountable task that a young person there has in attaining a quality education.
Still, it is not as simple as assuring a productive education. It is more a matter that corporations need to involve themselves in that system to assure they will receive the workforce they need - as to outsourcing being the easier path. The path they are presently on will likely bite them in the ass at some point, as the poor of the lesser nations they are using to produce their profits realize the disparity between them and their desire to purchase the things they are making for foreigners.
Do people want to be poor? Can we blame it all on drugs and sex? Gee, isn't that a simplistic cause all to answer the ills of the poor? Is there a category that fits this analogy? Yes, but really - they also fit in to the category of giving up. When something seems insurmountable, it is a natural human impulse to surrender to the forces keeping them there - or revolting, rioting, looting, burning - what ever it takes.
