How to get Popularis and Consul trait?

Hi Everybody!
I´m a new poster too this great Forum, but I´ve read it for awhile.

What I couldn´t find in the forum, was how do I get a Roman familymember to become Popularis and Consul?
What are the steps leading up to those traits?

I´ve played for decades past the year 172BC and meet all the other requirements for the reform, so I have a few generals with the right Command and Influence sitting in Rome hoping something will happen, but no. :no:

I´m really looking forward to see the Marian type of soldiers :yes:

Well, becoming Consul involves moving up the Cursus Honorum: Quaestor, Aedile, Praetor and Consul.

He's got to be at least 42, and it's better to have Influence. Better chances of getting elected Consul, I think. Also, remember that every new year (in Ver) there are two consuls. With luck, one of your characters will be elected.

As for Popularis, I've no idea. Suffice to say, if your general has "Optimates" listed in his traits, he's not going to trigger the reforms.

Popularis seems much more likely if the character is plebeius, but apart from that I don't know what might influence it.
Of course, being plebeivs lowers the chance to become consul. Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any major ways to influence this, just try to pick up traits that give influence if you can.

To get popularis keep the general around in a city with a temple to Cere's. Or better making him the governor of a city and start producing the line of cere's temples.

It takes alot more planning and roleplaying for Marius reform, I´ve noticed.
I think that before I get the cool legioneres, most other civilizations will be whiped out, too bad beacuse it would be interesting to take them on with a "true" roman force.

Ofcourse the option of capturing 90 settlements is possible, but somehow it feels wrong to have a mighty Roman empire gained and defended by barbarian mercs out of uniform. :no:

I don't think the temple of Ceres will help that much, at least, it hasn't had any effect on my games, apart from making the city more prosperous of course.


99% of the time, plebians will be Popularis and patricians will be Optimates. This means that if you want a Consul or Ex-Consul who is a Popularis, you've got to do alot of stuff ahead of time to ensure a plebian will get the office. Firstly, I recommend the Cotta family as the one you should try to get a consul out of. The first character of the line is an amazing governor once left in a city for a year or two, and I usually put him in charge of either Rome or Capua at the game start and leave him there until he dies. Since governor's seem to be more likely to get offices, and this guy gains management and influence quickly as governor, 9 times out of 10 I get that guy as a consul before he dies, especially if left in charge of Rome. With him having been Consul, all his descendants have the Nobile trait (ie, helpful for getting future Senate offices). Next, when he has offspring, typically two, I give them a full legion and send them into areas where they can enslave(I myself never enslave inside Italy or Sicily, but you can if you want). Enslaving enough times will make them wealthy and will move those guys and all of their descendants to Eques (ie, higher chance of getting future Senate offices). With the Eques and Nobile traits guaranteed to all of their descendants, Gaius Marius Cotta is just around the corner and it's a matter of waiting and meeting all the other conditions, like holding the settlements, fighting the battles, building the latifundia, etc. :book:

You could do the same with any plebian family you adopt/marry, but then it becomes harder to take that first step and get the Consul/Nobile trait early on.

Well, there's a few things I thought of to add, mainly about making sure that the family with Nobile/Eques doesn't die out (load them up with fertility ancillaries and hope they have sons, otherwise you have to start from scratch), and that it's more or less random what sort of descendants they'll have, so you shouldn't give up if you get a Dull/Charismatic/Langorous descendant when the Marian reforms should hit, because eventually you'll get the Sharp/Charismatic/Vigorous guy you're looking for.

Also, since you'll likely have to enslave about 5-6 settlements to get the Wealthy trait and move up to Eques, you'll most likely get the >2 command that you need at the same time you're trying to go for Eques, and the influence requirement will most likely be met by being elected Consul (although for characters with influence reducing traits, this might be a problem, so sticking them in a settlement as governor, particularily one with academy or library or that sort of thing, will do the trick eventually).

Personally, I try to get plebians promoted to Eques as quickly as I can, even if I'm not trying for the Marian reforms, because it just seems better and I like to see my characters succeed. Patrician characters are nice and all, but apart from getting them Wealthy or Nobile traits, there's not much room for success, while with Plebians, you can move up in the world :2thumbsup:

Eques is very bad for this plan - it decreases the chance of gaining Senate offices. That's what the trait says, anyway, and would be historically correct if it works the way it says it does. The equestrian families in Rome were a step below Senatorial rank. Indeed, one could argue that the Eques trait should give -10 fertility, in the sense that the characters we actually see in EB are assumed to be the leading Senators - Eques aren't Senators, therefore an Eques family should disappear from the game... If Eques is backwards like large granaries, having opposite effects from what the text says, I'd like to know about it!

If you actively seek Eques, governing a mining city (Illyricum, for example) seems to work. Senators were not supposed to engage in commercial activity other than owning land (or something along those lines), so extensive mining may have triggered the first Eques in my game. Or maybe it was coincidence - rich city, long term governor -> Wealthy -> Eques.

I agree with the rest of Victor1234's advice - the starting Cotta rocks, I think you'd have to take active efforts to prevent him from becoming Consul eventually. Though in my game he made Consul several years after the historical figure actually gained his second Consulship... Though he was governor of Carthage the whole time, so I guess it balances out. :beam:

Enslave is not especially relevant for Wealthy. Two exterminates often does it, as does extended governorship in a wealthy city. If command stars are a concern, governing a city with a Mars temple seems the most reliable method I've found to gain a couple.

Well, the text for Plebian says -3 to influence, making him less likely to get elected to Senate offices. For Eques, it says that he is less likely to get elected to Senate offices than the Senatorial class, with no influence penalty mentioned at all. From this, I assume the way it works is that you get the big penalty for being a plebian, and then if you get Eques, the penalty is reduced somewhat or not affected. Either way, since no direct influence penalty is mentioned, it can't hurt. Moreover, since to get the Eques trait, you need to become Wealthy, the Plebian penalty is reduced by 1 at a minimum (since Wealthy gives you +1 influence, and Very Wealthy further increases the influence bonus). So essentially, from what I understand, it works like this:

Plebian: -3 influence
Eques: -2 or -1 influence
Patrician: no bonus or penalty

Therefore a plebian has a lesser chance of being elected to an office, an Eques has a greater chance (thanks to the +1 influence from Wealthy or +2 influence from Very Wealthy), but still less than the Senatorial class, and the Patrician has the best chance of getting an office. Since a Patrician will usually never be a Popularis, being an Eques is an advantage to getting that Popularis Consul.

You are also right, both enslaving and extermination get you Wealthy eventually, as does governorship, but from what I've found, enslaving is the best solution, since governorship might cause it to happen or it might not and extermination gets you bad traits (Restless sleeper, butcher, warmonger, etc). You can enslave as many times as you want, and you'll only get good traits, such as Pillager, which give you a 10% bonus on looting and you will eventually strike it rich.

Edit: Moreover, I disagree about the Eques disappearing completely from the game. Ironically enough, Gaius Marius was himself an Eques, as were other important people in Roman history like Cicero and Tacitus. All these were certainly senators, and Marius was elected Consul seven times. During the Empire, the Eques class played a key role in the running of the empire, so there would no doubt be many of them in the Senate.

Just wanted to add something that I'd noticed,

Try to get all of your people to have four descendants. Why? Because you are guaranteed at least one Sharp/Charismatic/Vigorous descendant. I think it might be my game, but every single time I have had a family member with four descendants I've had at least one that is Sharp/Charismatic/Vigorous. Plus, the more babies your guys make, the more chances you'll have.


Btw, the easiest way to get Popularis is to have a character perform lots of conquests with enslaving/occupying. The Plebians love a conqueror, and since you'll be doing it anyway.........
And just to be clear, yes, the Cotta family does rock. I moved rulership of the Romanii into Caius Aurelius Cotta's hands (he's the first Cotta), and before he was forty he had 7 Command Stars, +10 Morale for all his units on the battlefield, 6 Management, and 7 Influence. He was still a Plebian when he had that. I made him my faction heir, and when he got promoted I sent him to Rome, where he finished gaining influence and management. On a related note,

How can the Faction Leader, in charge of the Faction's Capital, and ruling the Faction itself........................get bored with his duties? It really doesn't make sense to me.

Ah, you're more focused on Influence than I was. My reading is that Plebeian reduces your chance of being elected to office, and Eques further reduces that chance (and Nobile would increase the chance). I assume, all else being equal, that a Pleb/Eques/Nobile would be as likely as a vanilla Pleb to be elected, and a Pleb/Eques would be the least likely character elected.

But you're right, all else is not necessarily equal, and the wealth series does give you Influence. Do you know how much Influence is needed to offset the Pleb/Eques penalty? If each step of Pleb/Eques (or Patrician/Nobile, in the positive direction) is worth, say, one Influence in terms of election probability, that's not so bad, but for all I know it could be a much stronger effect.

Maybe I misunderstood what historical Eques means. I thought Equestrians were a distinct and non-overlapping class to the Senatorial families, basically the rich merchants and such. So there was plenty of intermarriage and some movement between classes, but at any given moment a figure was either an Eques or a Senator, not both (i.e. Marius, Cicero, et al. started as Eques and became Senators, at which time they were no longer Eques). But maybe that's not how it worked... Ah, according to wikipedia, the separation of the two classes occurred within the EB period as part of the Gracchi reforms. So the Eques trait really shouldn't matter a huge amount for most of the game.

Enslave vs. exterminate - chalk it up to play styles. I'm extremely averse to uncontrolled population growth, I want it between +0.5% and +1.5% almost all the time. Or zero for a city that has reached 24K population. The long duration of the enslavement growth bonus is - to me - more trouble than it's worth. The bad traits from extermination are unfortunate (restless warmonger :thumbsdown: ) but the guys I use as generals tend to suck anyway - if they were any good they'd stay in school longer and go govern a city somewhere. I suppose that's oddly Roman of me, in a way - the legions are so good they don't need competent leadership (though it's nice to have if available). Thank goodness the AI is no Hannibal. :beam:

what works for me is to leave my desired character in Rome for a few years. someone who has all the desired starting traits. I cannot remember what they are just think of the traits one would want in their leaders, "not what we have in our leaders":beam: he should have some influence and if everything works out I make him the faction heir. Then I send him to one of my armies, Germania seems to be pretty hot on my present campaign. after a few decades as long as you balance your slaughter and conquests you should have the desired traits. One should also have a couple characters in other armies and do the same thing to increase the odds. It worked for me:egypt:
