"Family"-names of Roman male children

Hello there,

one point about I'm wondering for a while is the strange occurance that the Roman male children inherit ONLY the "cognomen" of their fathers. Well, I'm neither specialist in ancient history nor Roman history, but as a far as I know it was the middle name, that was the Family name (something with "gens" and "nomen" :help: ).
E.G. Pvblivs Cornelivs Scipio.
Publius = pr(a)enomen
Cornelius = Familyname, he was member of the Cornelian house
Scipio = cognomen
Unfortunately the game engine does not continue the line of the Cornelians, but that of the Scipiones.:laugh4:

Now my question: is there any chance to correct this? I know of (sub-) mods that - more or less - fix this problem by giving the male children the Family- AND cognomen of the father, but as far as I know, this is historically incorrect, as the cognomen could differ (or even always did differ) from the father's one.

The basic Total War engine doesn't allow this I'm afraid. It is something we'd all love to see.

Sorted, and we are working on varying some cognomons, which actually were usually, though not always, the same as the father's.

Yep. This is already addressed in the internal build with the new Roman ethnicity system and is working rather well, still needs a few tweaks though. Actually each family had rules for the naming of its scions, for example the elder son of the Cornelli Sciponii would always be a Publius.

Can the new system impose rules like that (I doubt it, but you never know)?

No. However, from playing the new version I can tell you as the Romani its alot more immersive than before if you can believe it. Having family history and accurate names is an awesome boost to gameplay experience.

And what about female family members. In the Scipii family, females always where given the name Cornelia, hence Cornelia Prima, Secunda, and so on. But I guess that is will be very difficult or impossible to do.
