Island Portugal
Not too long ago, I played as Portugal except that instead of simply building an empire from Portugal, I sent my generals armies and ships ove to Ireland and Cagliari. From there, I made allies and then spent time helping them out by sending armies to the mainland. Since I think I play 1.0, I've rarely seen an amphibious invasion and I was able to safely help my allies without retaliation from my enemies.
Has anyone tried it also and gotten any interesting results or any variations or ideas?

Re: Island Portugal
If you like to roleplay as an ally, try allying with the Pope and turning his Holy Hatness into the world's superpower.
Ally with him and gift him half of the territory you conquer. Also, slip him some money every turn and turn him into a global giant.
You and me, Popey we aint nothin but Catholics, so let's ally and Crusade against all them non-Catholics.
Then, after you conquer the Mongols together, you can get into a civil war.

Re: Island Portugal
Since when does the pope need an ally to conquer the world? Every 3rd game for me, he goes on a rampage and takes over Milan, all of Italy and then declares crusades that he then completes personally.
If anything, Milan needs protection from the bloodthirsty tyrant of Rome.

Re: Island Portugal
The AI definitely launches naval invasion is 1.2, as the HRE i took Cagliari in the early game, and it was under constant (unsuccessful) siege for about 25 turns from the Moors, Sicilians, Milanese, and Byzantines, finally I thought i had the situation under control, and the Venetians show up! The thing that struck me as odd was what on earth were the Byzantines doing on Sardinia when there are much richer and more strategically important provinces all around their homeland.

Re: Island Portugal
Why couldn't it do it that much in 1.0?

Re: Island Portugal
Prior to patching, I used to do the same thing. Now I keep the castles on Corsica and Sardina Castles instead of converting them to cities. I've had the one castle seiged about 20-30 times. Most of the stacks were weak but it was surprising the first time it happened.
I may convert them to cities depending on which factions are still around and how much of the sea I controll. If I controll all of Italy, except Rome, then I convert them to towns.

Re: Island Portugal
The AI does naval attacks, but limited to only a few targets. I am playing as the sicilians now, and Ajaccio has been under siege every second turn, while Cagliari has only been sieged once, and is defended by a few italian militia.

Re: Island Portugal
I tried the same thing the last time I played as Portugal, except I captured the Crimea. My intention was to gain a small foothold (in case the Spanish or Moors decided to betray me, like they always seem to do) and possibly expand from there at the expense of the local rebels. Everything was going fine until the Byzantines launched an unprovoked attack and ended my little adventure.

I also took crimea for a bit since it was also isolated at the time. I eventually lost it later on.

Re: Island Portugal
I did something like that.
On my vh/vh campaign with russia, I built a port in novgorod the first 2 turns and gathered my army and agents to the port.
I trained 2 Ladya's and went to Britain.
When I finally arrived (It took me like 4 tries due to those stupid pirates) I took over the scottish provinces, I needed some heroic victories due to their great army. Next facing england. Now that I had 2 scottish provinces (Edinburgh and inverness) I let novgorod revolt and made edinburgh my new capital.
England was fairly easy to conquer 'cause they didn't have all their units in the same army like scotland did.
Now I have the whole british Isle and planning to conquer Europe.
That shouldn't be to hard thanks to my beloved HA I'm training in nottingham.
