Favourite Old-School Video Game Tunes (and let us reminisce)
Indeed, oldschool: nothing from the N64/PSX generation and afterwards but only that preceding it; Atari, NES, SNES, Gameboy, Game Gear, Megadrive, PC (loosely taken; as long as it could roughly be qualified "oldschool"), etc.
--
Randomly my list:
* Castlevania (NES)
* Mega Man series (NES)
* Metal Gear series (NES)
* Legend of Zelda series (NES, SNES)
* Earthbound (SNES)
* Metroid (NES)
* Final Fantasy series (NES, SNES)
* Chrono Trigger (SNES)
* Command & Conquer (PC)
* Super Mario Bros. series (NES, SNES)
* Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Castlevania simply has beautiful oldschool NES tunes. What I enjoy most about it is its dissonance, the chromatic movements, and all that ****. They simply sound well to my ears. Catchy.
Mega Man, oh... Mega Man *wipes away a tear*. The first NES game I ever played. The typical sound of this music is... "robot-like" for lack of a better description at the moment. With those typical synthetic drum sounds.
Metal Gear's I like simply because some tunes utilized later in the Metal Gear Solid series were already used then. Having played the NES series after the MGS series was a nice experience.
Legend of Zelda: what must I say about this beauty?
Earthbound: the silliest (and quite frankly the most... "unorthodox") video game music I had ever heard. The music (and especially the SFX) were good, and combine with the drug-like graphics it makes one wonder what had gotten into its makers.
Metroid simply has good tunes.
Final Fantasy; there isn't much to say about it.
Chrono Trigger: no words for it.
Blah blah... blah blah...

*Sniffle Mega Man, Metroid, Super Matio Bros oh that classic.
You know there's just something with old game tunes, when you hear it, you KNOW it's video game music.

Tie Fighter for Windows 3.1
Without a doubt.

Re: Favourite Old-School Video Game Tunes (and let us reminisce)
If I recall well, there is this file format called .NSF (Nintendo Sound File) whose data harbors NES music from the cartridges. These files can be opened with the proper plugins for your audio player which are to imitate the old NES audio equipment and such. I don't know about its legality, however.

Precisely.

Legend of Zelda, definitely. At least it´s the one I still recognise immediately, which cannot be said of the soundtrack of other games.
Pirates! Gold also has a couple of great tracks, though they´re all classical pieces or folk songs.

Agreed on Zelda, that one's a classic. Also, gotta love the super mario bros music!

Re: Favourite Old-School Video Game Tunes (and let us reminisce)
Castlevania
Street Fighter 2 "Guile"
I've got the original Minibosses CD. I'm also old enough to remember all the originals. :sadg:

I will always remember this and it's very strange music.

Ninja Gaiden I and II, especially I.
Battle of Olympus has really good tunes. Very underrated game too.

The original C&C is the only old game I remember.

Fond memories of Wasteland and Autoduel.
Dig those mid-eighties graphics! Who needs 3D anyway?

Those Street Fighter tunes... I had totally forgotten about them. I think Chun Li's is among the best of them, but they're all good.
How is 'Guile' pronounced anyway? I always said "Gweel" (or "Gou-(w)eel" or "Gou-weel-eh") for some reason. Is it "Guy-el?"

Mario Paint + Chun Li + Too much time on your hands = awesome
I remember playing Mario Paint. It was fun composing the Sonic The Hedgehog theme on it.

The same way you pronounce the word of the same name. Guy-el.

Here is a Tesla coil version of Super Mario Bros. This one made me crack up the first time I saw it.

Many many years ago when Mario Paint first came out on the SNES. It was a more simplified version, and I didn't have a camcorder. :tongueg:
It should still be on my old copy, if I ever manage to dig it out.

Ha! I think you're hardly one to talk, Kek. Unless I'm greatly mistaken, there's quite a few of us here (including myself) that are older than you. ~;p

Guardian Legend and Blaster Master haven't been mentioned, have they?
Phantasy Star 1 and Golveillius.
-
Re: Favourite Old-School Video Game Tunes (and let us reminisce)
I haven't played Blaster Master in ages. I have forgotten the music to it! :sadg:

Dark Lich theme for Secret of Mana. Loved it.

Re: Favourite Old-School Video Game Tunes (and let us reminisce)
I can't believe no-one's mentioned Bubble Bobble. Possibly the most annoyingly memorable game music ever.
