Need Help Editing the Family Tree

Greetings,

I was looking through the different files and a found the place in the descr_campaign_db.xml file where you can change the number of kids a character can have. I changed it from 4 to 8. However, in the game, once a character has more than 4 children, they don't show up on the family tree (children 5,6,7, and 8).

Is there some other place that determines how many children are displayed on the family tree screen? Or is 4 the most it can handle showing?

EDIT: also, I have been getting an "unspecified error" and CTD and the error log just looks like a bunch of rubbish. Could the family tree problem have something to do with it, or is it probably from something else. I also changed the vnv trait and triggers quite a bit.

Sorry, I am sure this part is a question that gets asked a lot, but I could really find anything that tells how to deal with an "unexpected error," just a lot of comments about it being infamous and a pain and all that.

I have not tested increasing the numbers yet (it was tempting however), but I believe the display currently limits it to 4.

As for the errorlog, you might want to change your tree setting back and see if you still get them.
Actually, if you posted your errorlog, I could probably help you figure out what's causing it.

Wow, this was weird: I tried the game once without changing anything, to make sure I was still getting the same error (it had been a few days since my last attempt), and it did; same CTD. Then I changed everything in my descr_campaign_db.xml back to vanilla. When I played it this time, it worked. Then 3 or 4 turns later, I got the same unexpected error. Here is my errorlog, but I never touched most of these files to begin with, which is what confuses me the most.

Err, can you run your errorlog showing only error and not trace? The trace usually isn't significant.
From a quick look at the log though, I cannot see anything that would be listed if you logged error only.

As for the CTD/unspeficied error, that can (although usually rare) be from modding. I do remember having modded the same file as you once and it at times leading to CTDs during AI turns - had some values out of bounds probably but those are oddly enough not picked up by the log.

You probably want to remove your descr_campaign_db.xml completely (i.e. let it load from the pack) and see if it still crashes during the AI turn.

-and a bunch of files to add a new faction which I couldn't get to work, so I just got rid of the data/worlds/maps from my mod folder.

Traits file in unlikely to cause a CTD in a running game. If it causes one, then at game startup, as the file is only loaded then and otherwise read from memory.
Intro movies shouldn't cause a problem, although I haven't tested that, so can't say for sure. I usually just change it in the pref file.

What's descr_character_traits.txt though? (the non export one) I can't remember seeing that when unpacking.

So all in all, what you have modded right now (i.e. the only files present in your mod folder other than the required files to make a mod folder work) are:
EDC
DC (whatever that is)
descr_strat

and outside you got the preference file.

Oops, that should just be descr_character.txt, the file that deals with characters on the campaign map. All I did there was add some movement points the the agents, and lower the upkeep for some of them.

And I got rid of the changes I made to my descr_strat, but there are a bunch of other files I modded when I was attempting to add my faction, like the files for the flags and stuff, but none of that should have an impact in-game, should it? Plus iirc I was getting this error sometimes before I tried to add my new faction.

EDIT: just went through and removed the files from my mod folder for the new faction, CTD still happens on Milan's turn.

Did you do any modding the first time you experienced the AI turn crash?
In my experience, it only happens if you mod something and did something wrong.

While I wouldn't think extra MPs would cause a crash, I suppose it can be possible if there is a max somewhere which wasn't properly capped and added movement boni forced it to overflow.

As for the other modded files, it would be good to have a full list - one of them will likely also be the culprit in the error you get shown.

Best would be to remove all files from your mod folder, see if you get an error / crash at all.
Then add one file at a time, beginning with the file you are most certain about etc till you find which file causes a problem.

I don't have time now to go through all the files one-by-one, but I was able to copy the save file for my campaign from my mod over to the vanilla game and load it, and it still had the same error at the same time.

Note: This was a few turns into the game (turn 8 I think), so I don't think it is a mp problem, because then shouldn't it have triggered on the first turn (when the modded file would first take effect)? Like on the first turn, I was able to move my spy for all of his mp, without a crash.

If there is a crash at the same point and time, its likely the save is I think corrupted. You can test this by doing something else before the crash and seeing if it still does, like attacking some Milanese unit.

Its also possible that a file that is only read for new campaigns was modded incorrectly resulting in this behavior, that in vanilla it also still crashes.

Really, the only way you can find the culprit is as I outlined before.

Yeah simply remove the descr_movies files, it's a bug in my stripped mod folder and they're not necessary anyways.

I have gotten it in other games as well.
I didn't add any traits from scratch, but have added/removed effects and changed the triggers for a lot of the existing ones.

Nope, haven't even met the pope yet, and didn't do anything related to modding him.

Yeah, what he said. I'm the English, but I have gotten similar errors as other factions. It usually is fine at first, then around turn 10 the errors start happening.

At around turn 10 factions are released upon the world, perhaps there lies some error ..

What I mean is, the AI (iirc, have modded my diplomacy heavilly) is set to like not attack each other and the player but only rebels for like the first 8-ish turns ..
This could possibly mean that whenever "some" faction(not just Milan) attacks or declared war upon an other faction it causes your crash ..

I seem to have found something. I started a new game, and am playing as Milan. I got to about turn 30 and have had no issues so far. It seems like either one of my files for Milan's AI has a problem, or one of the files I removed from my mod folder that only affects the game at the beginning of the campaign, or maybe the other save game was corrupt or something. I'm going to start another game as the British and see if I end up getting any errors in that one. Then maybe one with HRE or something to see if maybe it is a problem with the user being British.

Wow, that's a lot of playing I have to do. I hate it when I'm forced to play my computer games instead of doing my Statics homework. ~;)
