Prelude

The year is 1539.
Spain has found themselfs in a hornet's nest that is the new world.
They are caught between the warring factions of the Aztecs and the Tlaxcalans.
Being far away from home and in hostile lands, the spanish have a hard time expanding.
With the 2 native american faction moving vast armies over the spanish lands, they are stuck.
However, a conquistador named Americo Guillelmo, a 34 year old livin safely in Havana, eager for his first fight against the heathens gathered a large army.
1538 he set sail for the lands of the Mayans.
With a army consisting of 4 conquistadors regiments(2 mounted and 2 dismounted), 4 pike militia regiments, 2 regiments of musketeers and 9 regiments of native infantry, 1136 men in total they heading into the unknown.
Exploring the jungle, they found several cities inclueding the Mayan capital Chichen Itza. The Mayans displayed no interest in the strange people from across the sea nor any hostility.

In 1539, the spanish king developed an interest for the Mayans. With rumours of gold as far as the eye can see, he asked for his conquistadors in the New world to "releave" the Mayans on some of their wealth.
Americo, again eager to enter the heat of battle for the first time answered his king's call and headed towards the capital of the Mayans.
On the path to Chichen Itza, Americo encountered the army of the Mayan general Votan, just outside the city.
Votan's army was smaller then Americo, only 791 men strong. Americo, confident in his troops, his skills and that the lord almighty would help him destroy this heathen army.
So he attacked Votan.
But Americo, in his pride made a big mistake because nearby, hiding in the jungle was the imperial army of the Mayans under the leadership of Emperor Bolontiku himself, an army consisting of 1284 men.
Americo is not affected by the vast army that awaits him and his troops and is confident that God won't make him lose towards a bunch of heathens.The battle of Chichen Itza is about to take place.

Deployment

The battlefield was a grassy plain, some hills here and there but nothing to serious.
Americo got the high ground on this small hill.
At the front he puts his native mercs, all 9 regiments in one line, 5 ranks deep almost at the foot of the hill.
His hope was that they would be cannon fodder, that they would cause heavy casulties on the enemy and make the enemy tired.
Behind them, he put the 2 regiments of musket, slightly above the natives to fire death and fear into the heathen.
Behind them was the pike milita, 5 ranks deep.
Americo's hope was that if the enemy got past the natives and got close to the musketeers, they would fall back behind the pikemen where the enemy would face the sharp end of a pike.
Knowing that the pikes wouldn't be able to hold off the enemy for long he placed his elite, the dismounted conquistadors behind the pikemen with the mounted conquistadors on the flanks.
Americo placed himself behind his conquistadors.

The Mayans went with a 3 lines formations.
Skirmishers in the first lines, medium infantry in the 2nd and the heaviest in the 3rd.
The pieces are set for the battle.

The battle

The horn is blown and the drums pounds, the Mayan army under the leadership of Votan march towards the spanish followed by the imperial army, just a short distance behind them.
This vast army marching across the plain towards the spanish.
Half-way there, the musketeers are in range and opens fire.
One by one the Mayan skirmishers fall but unaffected by the incoming fire.
When they got to the foot of the hill, Americo sends forward the natives before the skirmishers got in range.
The natives made short work out of the skirmishers and made them rout with taking any casulties.
Americo is not surprised when he sees the first line of the Mayan army crumble and see it as a sign from God that he will win a great victory here and glory and wealth will be his.

The natives, now confident and eager from their success now faces the medium infantry of the mayans.
With great eagerness they charge the Mayan lines while the musketeers fire round after round into the Mayan formation.
However the medium infantry was a different story.
Infantry armed with clubs, axes and shields, fueled by the chantings from the priests of Kukulkan was a tough opponent.
Heavy fighting started but fear got the best of the natives and they started to run away.
The smile on Americo's face starts to go down. Now nothing was in the way for the mayans to reach the musketeers and they hurried over to them to silence their guns.
The musketeers were well-trained and quickly ran behind the pikemen and started to open fire again.

Showing no fear, the Mayans charged head-on into the pikes, impaling themselfs. But their charge gets stopped and the spanish cavalry, the mighty conquistadors charges into the Mayan's flank. Things were still looking for Americo, things were still going as planned.
However, the Mayans did not give up. Fighting to the death and not afraid of incoming bullets, horses or sharp pikes.
The pikemen, shocked by what they are seeing starts to cave in. One by one of the pikemen starts leaving the formation and before Americo understands what is going on, all 4 regiments of pikemen are routing and almost destroyed by the Mayans.

No choice left, he sends his dismounted conquistadors and himself into the fray.
After 20 minutes of fierce combat, Votan is slain and his army runs away.
Americo's army is reduced with a large number of men either dead, captured or running off the field.

But after a long march, the imperial army of the Mayan's finally reached the hill.
Americo fully aware that victory is far away and that shame and dishonor is coming down upon him. he lines up what was left of his men and charged the enemy head-on.
But the Imperial army is mostly heavy infantry who are all fresh and is no match for the spanish troops who are exhausted.
5 minutes into the fray and Americo is knocked off his horse and knocked unconcious by a club and is dragged off the field.
The spanish troops, seeing their general getting dragged off, lose heart and routs.
The Mayan army cleans up the rest of the battlefield for prisoners.

812 men are killed and 315 spanish troops are captured together with the grand price, Americo.
But the Mayan Emperor Bolontiku, impressed by the fighting skills of the spanish decides to release all prisoners without ransom.
Americo got back home to Havana and got removed as head of the army and will live out the rest of his days in shame.
The rest of his men have been refitted and is ready to revenge their fallen comrades.
