Effect of Mass Values

I remember the team at EB played around with the mass values a lot, especially to improve cavalry charges. I was hoping to do something similar with M2TW, so what exactly does this mass value do? Does it increase the density of a formation, or improve attack or charge rates?

The mass value for mounts increases the effect of charges, the higher the mass the more troops killed if all other variables stay the same. Units with low mass get more disrupted by units with higher mass, and units with low mass are very vulnerable to cavalry charges.

Note that there are different mass values as Lusted alluded. Mass for mounts (descr_mount) and mass for indidivual soldiers (descr_unit). The mass of men only works for infantry and artillery, but not for cavalry units.
