The Guard button mode in EB to the greek hoplites

Hi, i like to now what the guard button do with the greek hoplites like the spartans for example in EB? If i use the spartans or any other greek hoplite withe the button off the formation is normal, they fight to every side, but if i turn the button on, the formation became more tight, more like the phalanx formation. There some diference if the button is on or off for the hoplites like the spartans? Thanks..
