Glowing units

I've noticed that sometimes squads glow for a few seconds during a battle - why is that? I assume the men in the squad are receiving some form of bonus...?

That happens when they gain another level of experience i.e. another chevron.

When the units glow like that, it indicates that they have gained a point in experience.

Galactic Civ II, RE4, Pirates, Medal of Honor, etc, have all been taking up my time....so many games, some were only 3 bucks, how could I resist?

I've never seen theese glowing units.

You can change this in the preference file, something like Show unit upgrades: True. Set it to false.
