ok before i get flamed for this i am new to total war, i just recently purchaced it. the one thing i don't quite understand is what are the benefits of calling for a jihad? why don't i just get any regular army and have them take it over it just gets the same thing done...or is there something i am missing? can someone please kindly explain to me. thanks

first off you start with good units on your jihad and secondly it allows you to get units for free and to pass your army through other muslim provinces...
-
You can also send as many Jihads as you wish, while Crusades are limited to one active at a time. So keep Jihad'ing your neighbor province for lots of good troops.

oh yeah...one more thing...i noticed that when i launched a jihad..i found that many of my units would desert me if i stayed stationary..so basically is there a time limit for how long the jihad needs to be completed by before i lose all more units?
-
No, it's because the province you camped in has low zeal.
It is never a good idea to camp a Crusade, even if the province has high zeal. YOu may recruit many peasant armies, but will slowly lose your best units, the Templars. Not a good trade-off!

Hawk,
I don't believe that this is the kind of forum in which you'd get flamed for just asking an honest question. Enjoy the Total War experience.
