A little more information might be helpful...I assume it's a CRT if it's older. Those have a tendency to just take a poop after a few years.
I'm not sure you can really tell exactly when it's going to happen, but I do know that discoloration in the corners and vertical/horizontal lines across the screen are sure signs that it's on the way out.
I've heard things like cell phones can screw monitors up....I'm not 100% sure if it's true, but you may want to keep yours away from it just until someone says I'm crazy. :2thumbsup:
If it starts to smoke, it's probably done. Sometimes you can fix your own monitor... but you need to have a pretty good idea what you're doing first, and you have to let it sit a few days to bleed off the charge, and even then there are risks if you haven't shorted it. With monitors fairly cheap, it's probably not worth it.
I lost an old CRT not too long ago, and the first sign was the image narrowed in the horizontal band. As I was reaching for the button to flip it off *POP* and smoke. Pulled the plug. Paraphrasing what a venerable mechanic once said; they only put so much smoke in them when they're made, once you let it out they're garbage.
Unless you're sensitive to not-black blacks, go LCD.

My monitor was flickering for a while, it turned out that it wasn't connected well, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.
Then, recommend me of good monitors, cheaper but of good quality if possible,

Getting a 15" LCD could be hard, I'd suggest at least a 17" LCD, maybe even a 19" or 22" one. You probably won't regret it.:2thumbsup:

I have always used CRTs, right now I have a 21" Viewsonic G220fb, and love the heck out of it. Since my job entails staring at a screen almost all day long, I need something that is as easy on my eyes as can be. LCD screens, from both laptops and modern flat panels, are way too harsh for me, and using them for more than an hour or two always ends up giving me a migrane.
Recommend you try to see if there's some way you can have a 'trial period' with a good quality LCD to see if it's something your vision can tolerate, if not then you'll probably need to get a CRT.
What is it exactly that makes the LCD's harsher in your opinion?
I have one on my laptop (which is always how I go online), and it doesn't bother me anymore than my desktop, which is a CRT.
Perhaps you should turn the brightness down a little? Might help with your headaches (I do get those once in a while, but my CRT is just as likely to cause it as my laptops LCD).
I'd rather think you'd get a migrane from CRTs since they flicker while TFTs don't. TFTs are also sharper, since I got one I find CRTs rather blurry.
If it's not the brightness of the TFT that gives you a headache(that can be adjusted), you might actually want to consult a doctor about it, there are things like hidden farsightedness that can cause headaches etc when looking at a screen.
Bootsiuv and Husar, some people are more sensetive to LCDs according to my eyedoctor, I happen to be one of them. And as I was telling Husar on IRC before it booted me off, the modern LCDs aren't nearly as bad, the older ones were really, really miserable. I've tried fiddling with brightness, contrast, all the settings, even asked my eyedoc for advice, and nothing has really helped. I guess I did exaggerate a bit on how quickly it happens, with a really good high quality modern LCD panel, I can use it for a few hours, but after that I need to stop or I will start to get a progressively worse headache. Apparently more than a few people also are in the same way, so I wanted to caution our own dearest Caius before he drops some serious $$$ on a new monitor.
Hmm. It can work the other way, too. I'm much more prone to getting sore eyes from a CRT than an LCD. (He says, staring at the big CRT monitor he's too cheap to replace.)
I guess if you choose LCD monitor with wide range in brightness, you will be ok.

One interesting side note, I was reading my monitors help menu and it said that two thin horizontal lines were stabilizing wires which stabilized the screen.
Maybe your thin lines are comparable to that. My old CRT didn't have those as far as I know, and I did get bad horizontal lines right before it died.
