Grand Internet Sources Thread!

I had a brilliant thought the other day. We should construct our own thread with a great deal of internet sources covering all eras of history. This would be incredibly useful in case we had any questions requiring very general answers. I am looking for everyone to contribute, so everyone - Go through your favourites and show us what sites you have!

I would like you to give a link to the website, the website name and a brief description of what is on it. University websites are allowed, but only if they have specific information on their faculties sections.

I would also appreciate if you could post here any websites where you can get any FREE e-Books of out-of copyright or out of print books (with a historic basis of course). These shall be in their own section.

I will keep this first post updated as often as I can. I would appreciate if a mod could sticky this. If you see any broken links, please reply and tell me.

Eras - I will add more as needed
Note: The Eras are mainly based off of wars - these often in my opinion defined the period. Also I expect there will be a focus on the military on this forum.

The Spanish Succession War - A site that touchs on allpoints of the war including the commanders and the politics. Still under construction, so new information is constantly made available.
16th Century Warfare - Excellent articles on tactics and war in the 16th and early 17th century.
Thirty Years War - Medium detailed summary of the thirties year war but one of the best to be found on the web. The best feature is its large map of Germany.

Napoleonic
Napoleon, His Army and Enemies - This website focuses on the military of all the major powers of the Napoleonic Wars and has some very detailed battle descriptions.
The War Times Journal - This has a focus on some archival things, such as correspondences between the Generals
Napoleon Guide - A fairly simple look at the period, especially the armies. A great starting point for anything you are looking for.
Napoleon Series - A more complex and detailed look at the period than many other sources. Includes a lot of non-Military information and statistics that are hard to find elsewhere.
United States Military Academy - Napoleonic Maps - A lot of good and detailed maps here and plenty of other useful things on the site.

American Civil War
Alphabetical List of all ACW Battles - A good, basic write-up on the smaller battles with a nice detailed write-up of the larger battles as well.
The Peninsula campaign - An examination of the 1862 Peninsula Campaign.
Civil War Artillery - A detailed look at the Artillery used by both armies in the American Civil War.
American Civil War Homepage - A lot of information here, going right from Succession up to the reenactors of today.
Paths of the Civil War - An interactive map that shows the locations of all the battles of the Civil War.
Civil War Home - A detailed look at the military campaigns, as well as some of the more obscure things (Like Medical abilities of the armies) during the American Civil War.
Confederate Officer's Photo Album - Run by the Alabama Department of Archives and History
History Central - American Civil War - Good general information, including information about the economy.
Civil War Maps - A lot of maps from that era, as well as photos of the time.
Civil War Archives - Regimental Information - Contains information about both the Confederate and Union Regiments. Mainly where each of them fought.

World War 1
First World War - A general site with a great deal of information, especially about the battles and military.

E-Books and Out of Print Section
Project Gutenberg - Quite probably the world's largest collection of E-Books.
The Clausewitz Homepage - Contains a couple of works by Clausewitz in a well indexed and easy-to-read fashion.'
LacusCurtius - Contains many free copies of ancient texts with English translations.
Official Records of Confederate and Union Armies in the ACW - A lot of detail here, but very hard to find things.
Air War College - Registry of many major military theorists with their works and modern commentary on them.

Millitary thory of war USAFC
Registry of all the major milltary theroists with their works and modern commentary on them. Bit of a U.S. slant.

16th century warfare

Excellent article on tactics and war in the 16th and early 17th century.

The Thirties year war

Medium detailed summery of the thirties year war but the best I've found on the web. The best feature is its large map of Germany which has been a huge aid to me in 17th centuray and GNW/WSS.

Army of the Cumberland

Detailed site on the western theater of the american civil war.

It's in the Monastery - sticky thread called On Line History Resources, going in at the start of the thread is timing out on me too, but it's OK if I go straight to page 2 or higher. Maybe the first page has lots of large images.

And you can obviously use Jstor from time to time, but you know how and when to use it

Here are some of the sources I use occasionally at work. Most span the entire history of US military history, so I'm not quite sure where you would categorize them. Somewhere between Napoleonic and Modern, I would guess.

Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships - Histories of every American warship ever built
Marine Corps Historical Publications - All of the official USMC historical books, available online in pdf format. Very, very detailed accounts of USMC actions from Tripoli to the Persian Gulf War. The books are heavily researched and of the highest quality. I highly recommend this site; it is essentially a small library available for free.
National Archives and Records Administration - Archives Database - All kinds of information on American history, but with a very nice section on many, many aspect of the various US wars
NavSource - Photographic History of the US Navy - Numerous photographs of nearly every US Navy and Merchant Marine ship ever built.
Navy Historical Center - The "Online Resources" section has a great deal of information on all aspects of US Naval history.
Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall Online - Exactly what it says. Information on every US KIA from the Vietnam War. Many include comments from people who knew them with more specific data.
US Coast Guard Historian's Office - Information on all aspects of USCG history.
