GvI needs help.

I will start this thread, I have someone to tell this problem(?) I have.

As I told in Computer Addiction thread, Im a serious addict to Computer. My mother tried to keep me away from PC's, but as far as you can see, I'm still here. In front of a computer. Still playing those games.

It's hard to me, I can tell everyone I'm an addict, but I don't want to change. I guess its something related to my addiction.

Im stuck in an endless loop. My life is a ****** routine. School, activities and pc. All the days, except Saturday, in that day I always play pc games.

So, I feel like...well, a stupid. A guy without foot and hands. I can't move on this problem, and this problem is never going to be resolved.

One or two weeks ago, I had an important talking with some classroom mates, and they told me to have a better social life.

I have serious help, question is how? I'm not sure.

Well, there's your answer. Social life, activities, etc. are the way to go. Are you a high school student or a college student? If yes, just join a club and have fun; it's the easiest way to get friends if you're around that age. Take my example: I'm shy, fits that shy stereotype by the book, and I suppose a little hard to approach -- moreover I feel like whenever I let my guard down I act stupid, so I don't dare to even be that social in the first place. But when I was in a club a year or two ago all of the members were my friends, some very close, and I felt comfortable fooling around with them even if I *did* act stupid.

If you're busy enough you'll naturally retreat from spending too much time on PC. No need for painful rehabilitation or serious help or any such wasteful crap.

In fact, PC "addiction" is bull anyway. One spends time on PC not because he or she cannot retreat from it like a drug addict, but because there's nothing else to do. Read books? Yeah, try that for eight hours straight and feel your neck pain. Do nothing? You're better off on the PC. Sleep? We can't hibernate like the bears. Throw yourself into the academics? Anyone'll burn out soon enough with that boring, useless stuff.

Although you don't necessarily need to approach the problem from the "reality" alone. On the "virtual reality" side, if you think you have a problem, it's better to not get involved in: A. social networks (MySpace, LiveJournal, etc.) B. anime (lol) C. MMO's and multiplayer clans.

A and C will create "false" obligations that compete with any real life progress you might've made, the closest thing I think to the Boogeyman "addiction"; B, well, makes you an otaku. Which is bad for your problem. ~;)

I do. ~D I don't care about it that much though. I guess I'm a stoic (lol) though more likely I'm just a deep stage of inescapable inertia.

Just unistall your games and put them somewhere out of sight.

Get a girlfriend, get a job, that will get rid of your addiction for sure. I'm a lifegaurd and my shifts are huge, so it takes up a lot of my time, but its fun so whatever. I was exactly like you school, activities, talk with some friends, then PC for the rest of the night. A girlfriend would help too since you'd be doing things with her a lot. Also try to play an instrument you like, I spend a lot of my time playing the guitar now instead of playing video games. Try it out, I'm sure it'll help.

He's sixteen though (sorry, Garci...Caius! I just read your profile) - in my humble opinion I'd rather waste time in front of the PC rather than working on a minimum wage Macjob; unless, of course, your job is fun. Better to join a club and/or get friends/girlfriend while one's still young enough to have fun.

I like the instrument idea, however. May be I'll try it myself, lol. *Brother has a guitar and a keyboard gathering dust somewhere*

But how much time can you spend on just the internet?

Try downloading movies or tv shows and watching them. Or watch tv. If you do that you could go without the internet for a while and break the habit.

I think you spend too much time on your PC because there is nothing else going on. As soon as something else comes along, be it a girl or a hobby, your PC time will naturally drop.
I speak as someone who will quite happily spend 6 hours straight on my PC if I finish at 10pm and my wife has gone to bed. But if I finish at 3pm and get to spend time with my wife I don't even think about the PC. It's a crutch when I'm bored mostly.
Don't worry too much about it man, you'll end up causing yourself a real problem because you worry too much about a non existent problem.

Boy. Everybody has given pretty good advice. I know what it's like to be an addict, I don't think I separated from my computer for a solid year at one point. It was simply because it was my only escape from reality. I hated my reality so much I could get lost in another world. I realize now, that this was because I was suffering from Manic Depression (and I hadn't been treated at this point) and I think thats the cause for a lot of computer addicts. I'm not sure if thats your problem, but it might be one route to check out.

Anyways, don't beat yourself up to bad about it, just don't let it suck your life away. I assume your in school, so try to focus on your grades. I can't even tell you to do anything extracurricular because I hated most of that stuff, including sports. My second (and now ultimately first) best escape from reality is just getting some good hard exercise, weather thats a sport, martial arts, working, or just pumping weights and running at the gym. It makes me way more focused and happy with life, and I don't need to take any anti-depressants, and it gets me away from this bloody machine. (or you could just have a kid and then its good bye computer unless your feeding your kids the bottle trying to get them to sleep).

Don't have a wife but it's mostly the same here, I just use it because it's the best alternative at the moment, whenever there's a friend wanting to do sth with me (and unfortunately that isn't very often as most of my good friends are rather busy) I'll drop it without regret. :2thumbsup:

You can get some cheap job at 16 as well, I never wanted one by that time but now I regret that a bit as I'm 22 and have no experience which doesn't look too well when I apply for a job now.

Go for somewhere that looks fun - job wise - first and only job for me is a video store - blockbuster. I get friends and advice from everyone else, who is 19-23 or so. They can tell me what uni is like, how to handle things.

I have worked there for nearly a year now, and i dont plan to stop for a good 7 or so years.

It's not useless at all. It's a step in the right direction.

Addictions are overcome incrementally.

Garci, you really need to get a job! Better intersting one of coz.
I guess I'm cursed to sit at home for 160 of 168 hours in week. Until get a job *hopefully* or join army...
School time was good compared to actual. Not many friends, and even they now is far away, while I havn't entry any university.
Though I'm not addicted to games now, but internet has taken their place...
And mine home-trainings and mine music even aggravate this damn things.

This may sound stupid but isn't.

Don't make a big fuss about it at all! Apparently you're under the influence of your family and friends about the seriousness of your addiction. Well, I don't blame them and do believe they are right in their own sense. But trust me, telling yourself and others over and over that you are a computer addict without sociability won't help!

I'm not alien to such kind of, err, over-activity at the computer. I know about its many other kinds too: Television, sports, etc. It's not addiction in the meaning that you are addicted to drugs, weeds or alcohol. (Well, sport addiction sometimes joins that group, body hormones being involved, but that's not the point.)

You need one thing: Self confidence. Stop calling yourself names ("addict", "anti-social" or else) and look straight ahead. Making yourself overly busy at the computer results from your present lack of something to keep you involved. It's not what can be found by generic advice; it might be a girlfriend, a job, an interest or something totally different. Time will show.

Do try to get with people, with those you enjoy to be. Don't force yourself into doing or not doing anything, it won't help. Don't make yourself feel sundered from your games, but get parted from them at your own free will at times, which should not be restricted even by yourself.

Self confidence! Don't judge yourself. Don't analyse yourself by others' eyes. Just go ahead, pick some friends, pursue something you feel like doing and it will eventually go away before you even notice the difference. It may eventually come back at some point in time but don't worry; it would leave again.

I'm aware that these are the same generic advice you've been receiving but notice the nuance: Self confidence and free will! Do not impose yourself anything, just do it because you like it. Do not make yourself feel like a "patient" but believe in yourself! It will all get better, sooner or later.

I have the same problem, and it was once just as bad as what you described. It's less of a problem now and it's not keeping me back socially anymore, but I should spend more time on my study. So I'm still struggling with it, but I'm on the right way.

Some general advice: start cutting down your PC time slowly, but steadily. You shouldn't aim for abandoning it entirely, just reducing it to a point where you can be happy with it. Find other activities for your free time, even sitting down and reading a good book is an improvement. Also:

If these classmates are friends of yours or if you think they could be good friends (be careful though if you don't know them well), you should see if you can hang out with them outside schooltime.
I personally never made any lasting friendships during "high school" but I looked elsewhere and ended up finding plenty. Join a club of some sort, music/sports/whatever.

Today, I did not played games for 4 hours, which is a lot, compared to a "normal day", in those days I play 10 hours.

Now, I have to think about this. Thank you everyone, I just need time and a good job, but here jobs are need for a lot of people, and I am not sure if I will get one.

But I go to a Online School. But Still, sometimes I spend only 1- 1 1/2 hour a day on the computer, not bad (playing time, not includign School, since School is more important :yes: ), but some days like today (Sautrday),I play 2-4 hours..... SUnday, I will start breaking this addiction.:yes:

If your able to, find somewhere you can play sport on the weekend. That should get you outside in the fresh-air and away from the PC.

I spend most of my time on the computer. Many because I have nothing better to do. I don't even really play games anymore I just browse the interwebz. Do I have a problem? Probably. Do I care? Not really. I mean I don't have a girlfriend, my friends don't wanna hangout with me, I don't have anyway to get anywhere, basically I'm stuck in this hell hole. I am so pathetic.:shame: Well, I think that's enough of putting out my soul to people I don't really know.

Well if you wanna reducing your time at the computer, simply stopping to sit there wont help. You'll just get bored and get back to your computer a.s.a.p. ~;)

As soon as you find something to replace the time spent at the computer with, you'll be freed from som of your addiction automatically. :balloon2:

Garci in all seriousness, find a woman. A cute one, one that is outgoing. One that laughs and is fun to be around. You will break your addiction fast.

Try break the routine. Try something new and exciting. You can start that on internet. Just go on Myspace or Facebook and start adding all the people you know (Even if they arent your friends) and start talking to them.
