Re: samnites vs romans...
whats the difference between a principes and a legionary? both have a lorica hamata, helmet wich cheek guards, and a scutum.
As per samnites, as you said, they wouldnt even be around in the augustan era, so isnt it a moot point?
Re: samnites vs romans...
Samnite heavies have AP swords. Praetorians don't. The rest of the equation is really fairly simple. :beam:
As for the legionaries and principes, heck, the standard legionary kit was pretty much an exact copy of the "Polybian" principes outfit. Minus one greave...

-edit- oh yea and i know stats are misleading, but i even tried fighting samnite heavy infantry against preatorians and my praetorians simply got owned[medium difficulty]
The heavy samnites are supposedly an elite unit. Not to mention they have AP swords so a fight against heavy infantry will usually lead to the heavy infantry loosing.
Anyways they arent around in the Imperial era. Not to mention by then there's a good amount of a land barier between south italy and your enemies. So you wont be facing the mercenaries in battle either.
