Kingdoms: New Spain Succession - Write-Ups
Hi everyone ~
This is the write-up thread for the Kingdoms: New Spain Succession PBM.
Initial position after 1st player
We are at war with the Mayans and have taken Tikal from them as well as taking the 2 rebel settlements of Coatzalcoalcos and Chetumal. Taking these 3 settlements has cost us dearly and we are relying on native mercenaries to bolster our armies. Sieges will continue to be costly as our artillery is down to 1 culverin.
We have managed to ally with the Aztecs as well as giving and receiving military access. They are growing into a major threat as they have a number of large standing armies. We have also secured trade rights with the Tarascans.
Objectives for my turn
- Make contact and trade with other tribes
- Destroy last 3 Mayan settlements
- Recruit Spanish troops to replace large initial losses

Relations Report
Our explorer sets off inland to make contact with other tribes. He makes contact and secures trade rights with both the Chichimec and the Apacheans. We recruit a number of guides in order to keep an eye on the Aztecs and Mayans. Scouts sighted French explorers moving down from the north and securing a foothold in Miccosukee lands at the settlement of New France. Missionaries set of around the rebel territories spreading the word of god. Merchants are recruited to trade the valuable resources we have found.
Construction Report
Roads, land clearance, grain exchanges, churches, brothels and communal farming are prioritised in all settlements. Watchtowers are built at the edges of our territory to warn of impending attacks.
Military Report
Francisco de Montejo goes to govern Tikal.
Milita units are recruited in all our settlements. Reinforcements are brought in by boat from Havana in preparation for the assault on the remaining Mayan settlements.
A force of Mayans attack our army of Natives near their capital led Jesus de Bolaque and Niccolas de Tarragona. Only the constant charges by the 2 general-led cavalry units into the priests of kukulcan bring us victory as our native mercenaries are quick to rout.

Relations Report
Our war against the Mayans has led other tribes to distrust us and relations are getting strained. So far there has been no contact with the French and we hope this continues. More merchants are recruited to continue trading the valuable resources we have found in abundance.
Construction Report
Some of the advanced settlements are now having town halls, inns and markets built. Havana sees the building of our first blacksmith to better equip our troops.
Military Report
Jesus de Bolaque assaults Trujillo immediately as the settlement has no walls and converts the population. We are awarded 10,000 florins by the Spanish Consulate. Jesus de Bolaque leaves the settlement in the hands of our native mercenaries and heads back to fight the Mayans.
https://img105.imageshack.us/img105/4212/0001ft3.th.jpghttps://img86.imageshack.us/img86/5572/0002go3.th.jpghttps://img105.imageshack.us/img105/8236/0005xj2.th.jpghttps://img105.imageshack.us/img105/3139/0012zz7.th.jpghttps://img105.imageshack.us/img105/5809/0014yl6.th.jpg
The Spanish Consulate then request that we take Quirigua from the rebels. Jesus de Bolaque is diverted to the settlement and the population surrenders after a siege. The population is put to the sword and 3,640 florins are added to our treasury. In addition to this the Spanish Consulate rewards us with 6 units of Conquistadors and 3,000 florins.
Catastrophic news................Baron Diego has died of natural causes. His heir Pedro takes up the reins as the new Baron.
In a surprise attack the Mayans lay siege to Chetumal. Niccolas de Tarragona leads his army from Altun Ha and surprises them in their rear. In the following battle the Mayan Emperor Cabracan is captured but is put to the sword after his ransom is refused. Niccolas de Tarragona then heads for the Mayan capital of Chichen Itza.

Francisco Coronado heads to the Mayan settlement of Uxmal and defeats a Mayan army sent to intercept him. Francisco Coronado dies in the battle but Esteban Dabodega becomes the man of the hour and leads the army to victory. Esteban Dabodega then takes the weakly defended settlement and after putting the population to the sword adds 8,052 florins to our treasury.

Pedro Menendez lands north of Havana with his expedition but is re-routed to Vera Cruz to defend against potential Aztec attacks.
Niccolas de Tarragona leads his army against the Mayan capital of Chichen Itza. The capital had a large relieving force nearby but in a great tactical move Niccolas de Tarragona had his cavalry charge the town square whilst his infantry defended the destroyed gate. Mayan infantry guarding the settlement walls tried to return to the town square but were caught in a vicious trap as our infantry guarding the destroyed gate caught them in their rear. The large relieving force never made it into the capital and they surrendered once their Emperor was killed. The population is put to the sword adding 14,571 florins to our treasury. This was the end of the Mayan faction.

The Council of Nobles requests that we capture Tlacochcalpan from the rebels and offers a reward of 5,000 florins.
Our fleet in the Havana docks is savaged by a storm and 96 sailors lose their lives.
Re: Kingdoms: New Spain Succession - Write-Ups
Going into the Year of Our Lord "Turn 60" things have taken a difficult turn. New Spain is at war with the Aztecs and has made some strides but our armies consist largely of native auxilaries and number nowhere near as many as the Aztecs. We have no allies upon the peoples of this land. The English had landed with large armies in the Yucatan near our territories.
The Viceroy plans on merely holding off the Aztecs west of Tlaxcallan, and stalling the English with diplomatic proposals. This will free him up to send armies south of Vera Cruz to cut the main portion of the Aztec Empire from their smaller possessions near the Yucatan.
The first challenge to his plan takes place when General Pedro Menendez, charged with guarding the western passes, is attacked by an Aztec army.
https://img250.imageshack.us/img250/838/image006lq0.jpg
Pedro had few Spanish troops and had to pray that his native mercenaries would be able to hold the high ground against elite Aztec troops.
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/285/image009nx8.jpg
His hope proved fruitless, however, and the natives on his side quickly began to route. He charged his few Spanish troops into the fray, including his own bodyguard. The fierce Aztecs managed to kill all of them, leaving him to flee on his own.
https://img250.imageshack.us/img250/...mage010cq9.jpg
The remaining troops of the crown fought on, but in the end it was all in vain, and they were defeated.
https://img250.imageshack.us/img250/...mage013ri8.jpg
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage015rs5.jpg
This was a disaster for the crown, and bad news arrived of even more English armies landing on the Yucatan. Thankfully the bad news was followed by good. A new defensive army was put together from garrisions from nearby towns, and the Aztecs were not able to gain from their victory. The English agreed to sign an alliance, and appeared to be moving west to take Aztec lands. Best of all, rifts began to appear in the Aztec's alliances. The Apaches had gone to war with New France, and forsaken their alliance with the Aztecs. Spanish diplomats were immediately dispatched to the the Apaches.
https://img250.imageshack.us/img250/...mage017ic6.jpg
Shortly after, a break through was made in the war against the Aztecs. General Dagobeda moved south to take Tochtlan, splitting th Aztec lands in two. Sadly he died in the assault, but his efforts enabled the Spanish to concentrate much of their efforts on taking the now isolated Aztec settlements of the western Yucatan.
Meanwhile, diplomatic negotitations with the Apaches had gone well and an alliance was signed. They even promised to provide mercenary soldiers far superior to those found among the subjugated peoples of formerly Aztec lands.
https://img250.imageshack.us/img250/...mage040oy8.jpg
Next a decisive battle would be fought against the Aztecs. General Goncalo de Terragona, with an army comprised of more Spanish than native troops, moved west to take the place of Pedro Menendez, facing a two Aztec armies in the process. This battle would determine the security of the center of New Spain around Vera Cruz.
https://img62.imageshack.us/img62/3775/image041yp0.jpg
After quickly routing the smaller Aztec army, General Terragona lined up his infantry in a single battle line and awaited the charge of the larger one. The Aztecs proved surprisingly ready to throw themselves onto Spanish pikes.
https://img62.imageshack.us/img62/694/image045oe8.jpg
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage047bz5.jpg
Once the infantry lines clashed Terragona had the cavalry sweep around to charge the Aztecs from behind. Although the battle was bloody, the Spaniards were eventually victorious.

https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage054jg8.jpg
Around the Year of Our Lord "Turn 74" the English betrayed us as expected. A ceasefire is quickly signed with the Aztecs and Spanish armies are rushed together to fight the English. General Enrique Justeniano takes a mostly native mercenary army to guard a bridge the English must cross to make their way west to core Spanish territories. The English, confident in their superior European soldiers, attack the Spanish force.
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage058np7.jpg
Native archers let loose a hail of fire arrows upon te hapless English, demoralizing and confusing them as they cross the bridge.
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage060ar5.jpg
As soon as the English crossed, the native soldiers let out war cries and charged downhill at the enemy. There was an immense slaughter, but eventually the English lost heart and fled.
https://img62.imageshack.us/img62/1367/image062ib4.jpg
https://img250.imageshack.us/img250/...mage063ss0.jpg
Justeniano barely had time to scrape together replacements for his losses when another English army rushed across the river, this time across a fording point rather than the bridge.
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/153/image073lx2.jpg
As before, his infantry awaited the enemy at the edge of the river. This time they even had a few Spanish pikemen with them.
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage075qz6.jpg
The English routed even quicker this time, and their generals were slaughtered as they ran.
https://img250.imageshack.us/img250/...mage077ux3.jpg
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage080kp5.jpg
Unbeknownst to the General, he had just taken out the entire leadership of the English expedition forces. Without leaders they quickly fell to infighting and vanished, presumbly killed in native ambushes.
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage083pf6.jpg
Shortly after hearing the good news, the Viceroy died of a tropical disease, and was replaced by Viceroy Jesus. Jesus decided to take out the Aztec capital and ordered general Goncalo to assault Tenochtitlan itself. The great city appeared nearly empty, but Goncalo would not be tricked and had his cannons open up multiple breaches in the walls.
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage087ax0.jpg
Nativ mercenaries were sent into the breaches first to face the few Aztec forces that sprang up, but their performance was poor and real Spaniards had to take up the slack.
https://img62.imageshack.us/img62/8942/image097wb2.jpg
The native forces crumbled quickly and their general had to join the fray with his bodyguard. They fought bravely, but eventually even the general himself fell, surrounded by dead and wounded Spaniards who had underestimated him.
https://img62.imageshack.us/img62/7968/image101vr6.jpg
The city had been seemingly abandoned. Bereft of it's defenders and apparently vacuated, the general had time to march through the streets of the city, in awe of the architecture theseprimitive people had managed to build.
https://img117.imageshack.us/img117/...mage102aq7.jpg
A few stragglers from the enemy forces were found cowering in some of the temples. The General decided that for their cowardice they would die by firing squad.
https://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6933/image109dj2.jpg
https://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6673/image110zw7.jpg
By Turn 80 New Spain had increased greatly in power and prestige at the expense of their enemies. The English were destroyed, and the Aztecs on the run. Tenochtitlan was renamed Mexico after the word used by the Spanish for its people.
