No merchants for native factions ?
I've yet to see a single native merchant or create one as the Aztecs.
Seems lopsided to me as New Spain can rely on some and there is nothing to counter them except assassins and the dread that comes with it...
Finally, Aztecs had grat merchants trading with the Maya and traveling as far as the Andes so I think it should be in game.
Has anyone any info on whether or not their are native merchants ?
Re: No merchants for native factions ?
No native merchants. And if I recall correctly foreign merchants trading on your lands give some profit to you too. And I dont know how you could possibly avoid dread as one of the native factions... But if it's a "no" to assassins you can always resort to the inquisitor-bashing trick.

Who needs merchants when your native factions pull in tons of money per city and most units have about 1/2 the maintenance costs? :2thumbsup:

Just for the fun of it and to spite the Spaniards :2thumbsup:
Re: No merchants for native factions ?
You get assassins and Spaniards don't. Simply kill their merchants for fun.

There aren't, which sucks. And is ahistorical--the Aztecs actually had a merchant class known as the Potcheca.

I would prefer we both got those...

Exactly my point, the Pochtecatl were a major part of Aztec culture, acting as diplomats, explorers and traders, spreading Mexica culture through MesoAmerica...
Re: No merchants for native factions ?
Playing as Spain; first turn I moved my merchants to some gold and silver to the west (in Aztec territory) that was supposed to be worth some decent money, but by the time they got there a few turns later they only made ~30, never to rise above 70 as their skill increased. I used toggle_fow and there were absolutely no profitable resources anywhere on the map. Maybe the AI has a secret advantage and their merchants rake in cash, but playing as Spain, merchants were totally useless so you should not regret their absence.
Re: No merchants for native factions ?
That's why the AI moves them around so much. The quickest way to develop a merchant is too develop the "well traveled" trait line by moving him all around the map. And sniping out low level merchants of other factions.
Re: No merchants for native factions ?
If you play as Spain and move your capital to Santa Cruz, place two merchants on the sugar near Havana. There they will make some decent money.
