CD stored in MTW:VI main folder somewhere?

No, this is not a thread about piracy! ~;p I have a legitimate copy. I'm afraid I can't find the piece of paper with my CD key anymore. However, I have entered it in the MP meny of MTW before, and I guess you won't have to enter it every time you want to play MP? So, there must be a place where the code you entered is stored.

I wonder, does anybody know how/where to find this? If so, you might just save me from the need to buy another copy. That would be frustrating.. :shame:

This is for M2TW but it will show you how to get there.

In the right-hand pane, you will see the game's registry entries.
If you have already entered your CD Key before it should be showing here.

The cd key is stored in a file, but it's encrypted. The best thing to do is to make backups of all the .cfg files in the main game older. These can always be copied over a fresh install. You would want a backup on some kind of removable media as well in case your disk drive fails.

The game doesn't use the registry for anything except to determine if you have MTW installed when you go to install the VI add-on. The cd-key is not kept in the registry. In fact, the term cd-key is a misnomer. It has nothing to do with the cd copy protection, and is not needed to install the game or play SP or LAN games. It is only a code to allow online multiplayer to work through GameSpy, and is read directly from that encrypted file. Eventhough online multiplayer is a small fraction (less than 5%) of Total War players, the game has this additional cd-key restriction placed on online multiplayer as though it was the main focus of the game.

I thought it had been determined that your cd-key works, but maybe I'm wrong about that. Since you don't have it anymore, you can't even try retyping it. Maybe you're doing something else wrong, but we aren't aware of it because we aren't right there watching what you're doing. I don't really know what else it could be.

Tosa just informed me that you have to make a new GameSpy account if you are trying to use MTW Gold with an old MTW/VI GameSpy account.

And use that new account (created it starting from the in game option to do so, maybe it performs some extra activation?).
