Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
Playing as the Romani (as always) i just had Mediolanum spontaneously revolt to the Aediu, kicking out my governor and garrison units and filling the entire city up with 20 units of Eleutheroi (Freed slaves) with no experience but gold armour and silver weapon upgrades. I sent my faction leader and his full legion, who just happened to be passing through the region on their way to relieve the legion that just captured Massilia and needed retraining. The Eleutheroi have 7 armour and 5 (or 6) weapon ratings, so obviously i envisioned a quick battle with about 1/4 - 1/3 casualties, and a nice fat treasury full of loot when i slaughter the population for rebelling.
Here's where the holy crap bit comes in. I send in two siege towers and order my two units of auxiliaries up to the walls, i don't remember the unit names but they are the ones who wear a white robe and fight with a spear and large shield, they have around 17 armour and 15 attack ratings. Half of each unit was decimated by rocks :laugh4: that the Eleutheroi throw down at them, the remaining 50% of each unit is decimated as soon as it hits the walls in less than 30 seconds. The second two units of auxiliary units suffer the same fate, save for 1 soldier out of the 244 that escaped the walls in a panic. Next i send both units of Hastati in my legion who suffer massive losses before even reaching the bottom of the siege tower, and then suffer the exact same fate as the auxilia before them.
At one last attempt i send the triarii who suffer no missile fire as the slaves have now run out of rocks, but as with the other units they are massacred in less than 30 seconds. To spare my principes a certain fate i decide to withdraw the rest of my army to suck up some reinforcements from the surrounding towns and attack again. My faction leader has lost a command star for the embarrasment his legion suffered at the hands of rebellious slaves , and has become a drunkard.
The very embarrasing end result...

Look what they did to my legion. :shame:

Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
It's a known bug. Apeleutheroi have a lethality rating that is over 20 times higher than what it was supposed to be.
bovi has a fix for it here https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=93820
The title of the thread is "1.0 fixes you should try before posting" :)
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
Ah, i wasn't complaining, just thought i'd post. I love reading little stories like the one i posted and assumed everybody else did too. Will that fix work with saved games or will i have to start a new one?
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
Bovi lists the Apeleutheroi fix in the 1.0 fixes thread as "optional", "not important at all" and "unsupported".
Based on the discussion here, this fix (thanks, Bovi!!) sounds quite the opposite! What say you, Bovi?
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
Almost certinately save game compatible, and also I love reading little things like this as much as you do Dayve, it is things like this that truely make eb a comunity, not just a bunch of nerds that happen to play the same game.:laugh4:
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
It's optional and not important, because it will only rarely cause problems for people. Any missile unit will massacre them regardless of their lethality. It's unsupported because I don't care to spend time to help those who are unable to find the right folder to put it in, when it's not important.
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
Is there any way to limit the number of Apeleutheroi units that are spawned? I just had a 20 unit stack of them come after me with gold chevrons and and weapon/shield upgrades

What is spawned, how many, and what experience/upgrades they have in entirely based apon the game engine and hardcoding. (Though, in most places, they will only spawn what the receiving faction could have recruited in the town.)

Thanks, bovi...that answers it precisely. If the fix creates a more realistic situation, I'm all over it and will download this evening!
[Yes, I'm at work -- just one of the millions of hours of American business productivity lost to the Internet...!!!]

Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
One of my Aedui generals became mad when he lost a battle. Not battle-mad, asylum-mad. It was tragic. And he was the faction leader...
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
With fixed lethality, can a army of rebel slaves still defeat a roman legion? I like the notion that a bunch of slaves, perhaps with a spawned leader who gives a large morale bonus, can rise up and create the socii wars.
This gives me a RP idea. Totally surrender the Arverni lands in exchange for a single Roman province. Maybe use force-diplomacy to get the Aedui to declare war on Rome to assist if you conquer so many settlements.
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
You get really funny battle speeches when your generals are insane . I've gotten ones about the moon people and crap .
That also was a 10 star general .
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
But we've got lovely hats, and they will protect us from their terrible gaze? Or some such thing?
Suggestions how I am going to make sense out of that in a prebattle speech?
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
Nah, the slaves get massacred after the fix. After i was defeated i applied the fix for them and the entire army of slaves laid siege to Sagesta, with an Aediu general that had 3 command stars or so... The entire force war defeated by 3 units of Lugoae and a crappy family member, and my faction leader exterminated Patavium and every remainder of Celtic culture there and funnily enough, is no longer a drunkard...
I swindled a ceasefire out of the Aediu by giving them 50,000 minai, the Averni were growing quite big and i wanted to keep a balance between the Aediu and Averni so that they are constantly at war, that way they leave my two cities in southern Gaul alone while i finish destroying the baby killing Cartheginians in Iberia.
Unfortunately the Aediu used my 50 grand to roll over the Averni and now the balance of power is tipped 4-1 in their favour... It's all good though, i sent plagued spies into every city they own, now the Averni are starting to conquer again and balance is almost restored once more. That plague doesn't seem to be going away though... It seems the Gauls are quite handy when it comes to espionage, they've passed the plague onto the poor Germans who were just minding their own business.
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
If two provinces have alot of trade, does that mean the plauge is more likely to be passe along?
Re: Apeleutheroi - Holy crap.
No, not to pass along unfortunately. It increases the chance of it breaking out in the first place though.
