All my soldiers are complete retards! [edited]

Don't mean to offend anyone with the title but I'm sick of my Pontus soldiers. They do ridiculous things! I would order an army to march one way, they go another. I order a cavalry charge on one unit, they charge on another. Archers do the same thing.

I've been kind of ignoring this but now 243bc, when I invade Athens, I lost half my force defeating an equal force. (Those General Infantry are insane though)

I had a few units of light cavalry, when I ordered them to run the OPPOSITE way of the approaching spearmen....all of them turn around and charged head on the spear points. :wall:

I don't want this to sound like some angry rambling but am I missing something here? Some important aspect of the RTW engine? It's annoying trying to control an army that thinks everyday is opposite day.

Any suggestions?

Never give group orders, it will make your life easier and save your liver.

First of all, I just want to apologise to anyone with down syndrome.
Second, the light cavalry unit didn't happen to have skirmish mode on?
Third, when units don't go where you want them to, are you giving commands to multiple units at the same time?
Fourth, the units that don't go where you want them to, are they grouped?
Fifth, are you sure you ordered them to attack the correct unit, so that there weren't a few men of another unit in the way?


The most probable thing that happened to your cavalry is that you controlled them individually, until you ordered them both to retreat. The two units thought you wanted to them to keep formation, which at the moment happened to be "I go this way, you go that way". I doubt both of them actually went the opposite way, just the other one. If they both attacked the enemy, then they were probably caught in melee without guard mode after you ordered them to move, so they attacked to defend themselves. With guard mode, units won't attack without orders. That's all I can think of.

Sorry for the down syndrom thing, just a frustrated comment at 4 am which I should of thought about before saying.

I ordered the units in a group, then seperately. Skirmish mode was off. Happens many times, maybe its the fact that guard mode isn't on as you say, although non of the units were tangled with the enemy or even close for that matter.

Sometimes I spam orders to go one way, and they still do something completely stupid resulting in me yellow "F***ING RETARDS DONT JUMP ON SPEARS*

Oh well, I guess I will look at it as a nice way to try to balance the fact that I am a person, and my enemy is AI.

I know what u mean... RTW has a bunch of bugs I can't find the post were I numbered A WHOLE lot of them. From cavarly to infantry, etc...

Anywho rule of thumb with cavarly;
When they are in a GROUP and u tell them to attack target X. If there is a soldier of unit Y, touching one of ur cavarly, that cavarly will go after unit Y.

Best thing to do is UNgroup cavarly, hit "Ctrl-C" that selects ALL ur Cavarly units and tell then to charge target X. Or select the cavarly unit individually. A little too much micro, I know, pain in the butt, but Pause helps.

As for archers, anyone have the problem that many times, if you select them to shoot one target, they select some other nearby unit to shoot at?

I've tried this as a whole group of archers, or manually choosing each unit. The only way I have them attack the right unit is if I force them to march relatively close to them.

Imagine how frustrated commanders were in real life. And they didn't get the benefit of a bird's eye view.

I'd imagine they would be VERY frustrated. Especially if an army of naked guys living out the scarface coke fantasy charged at them..very scary!

Many units are Impetuous. It means that they can charge without orders, if they have an enemy nearby. Sometimes its hard to make such unit disengage from an enemy. I'm not saying this is what happened, but you should also take this into account when "walking" impetuous cavalry near enemy units.

I will take this into account, thank you.

Although for that particular situation, the spearmen were a large distance away marching towards them. I had ordered the cavalry to move to a distant and strategic location, but instead they marched the other way, until eventually charging into spear points. It was very frustrating, but thinking back now I think its VERY funny.

Imagine a bunch of light skirmish cavalry with daggers trying to stab an army of spear points..:sweatdrop:

Yes grouped archers will shoot at whomever is closes to them. Ungroup, Ctl+A for archers and Ctl+S for skermishers I think are the hot keys (I don't use them as I use W,A,S,D, as my camera keys). You call also make Ctl+A group both archers an skermishers by messing with the codes... ask somebody else because I don't know how... :embarassed:

This can depend on whether the trarget is continually in range and also if you have hold position on. The problem being the AI can move about alot.
If I want to preserve arrows for a prioity target, I have 'Fire at will' off, and 'Hold position on.' This way I know whats going on, as after I manually select a target, and it moves out of range, they will automatically cease firing. Leaving me to re-appropiate said target, and/or advance my forces so that the target stays continually within bowshot.

One tip I have learn't from the sneaky AI, is to fire sideways across the battlefield to hit a target where he may be more exposed(no shield).

I always have fire at will turned off to conserve arrows for shooting flanks or rears of enemies Sometimes I leave fire at will on for the first volley just so I know I am in range of targeting light infantry if needed.


I just started a campaign as Lusotan....never have I experienced such horrible unit response. I guess thats what happens when you play a Barbarian faction.

Units that toss javelines before getting into mellee, well they would toss javelines when ordered to mellee..vice versa.

Orders were so screwed up (Invidivually controlling units not groups), my army turned into 1 large mob.

Maybe I should reinstall EB...if only I wasn't so lazy.

I haven't had any problems with my Arverni, they are very well behaved. THe only problem I have is that in total annihilation battles, pursuing cavalry won't break off to pursue another unit unless I give them a move command to break them out of their funk, THEN tell them to pursue. And that destroys my whole tactical plan because sometimes it's the enemy FM I'm chasing, and the precious seconds wasted in the confusion leads him escaping to continue the fight in a settlement, or to come back at me with an instant merc army and a fullstrength bodyguard next turn.

It's not just groups that do funny things. Sometimes (stupid me i guess, but i don't want to issue move orders to 20 units separately) i use Ctrl + A to select all, and then tell them to move forward or somesuch. Well some units march forward, some march backwards, some just rotate on the spot, some wander off to nearby woods... it's kind of like watching an escape from a mental institution. :dizzy2:

Yes thats the entire problem. Units with javelin wont toss javelins. When using alt+attack in hopes of having them charge..they sometimes toss javelines. Its random bugs like this I'm expriencing in this game. I havent had this kind of behavior ever, just starting this week. Maybe I just never noticed in the past...

pezhetairoi, I have that same problem too. I have lost the chase on many generals because of this and caused quite some annoyances :furious3:

About the groups, you have to ensure ALL units belong to a subgroup, then hold alt before rightclicking to ensure they freeze in that current formation when advancing. Otherwise they will just redeploy into a standard AI (read: retarded) formation. And even when you do the abovementioned, sometimes they will redeploy in another formation if the edges of your formation cross over the battlefield edge.
