im having a small problem with creating a smoothe transition between desert climates and grassland(light blue). does anyone have any good tips/suggestions for creating a smoothe transition between the climates without having this horribly ugly changeover. there can be NO mountains nearby(sadly) and trees couldnt cover the entire border.
I'd suggest make a new texture tga for at least one of the semi-arid climate (blue), ground types, say the low_fertility one, they are probably all using same one at moment unless you already modded descr_aerial_map_ground_types.txt.
Unless you're particularly good with photoshop etc, easiest way of changing texture is by putting another texture or plain colour over it as a less than 100% opaque layer and merging. Trying to do too much else by hand can leave you problems as you can end up with the straight edges of the texture showing up where the pattern repeats.
Make your new texture something slightly greener than the desert but less so than the grassland and use that ground-type at the start of the grassland area, so transition works better.
If you've just working with the existing tga's you can do a bit by artistically arranging where they start and end, but you have to do it in reasonable sized random looking shapes normally, just trying to have odd alternating single pixels of textures that contrast against each other a lot looks really naff, as the way the game merges them isn't attractive.
I've made transitions in climate by doing sort of what Mak. describes ..
Like using mountains on the border of climates but than make the mountains covered in yet an other climate, wich makes it look completelly diff. in most cases, wich again works for me .. :2thumbsup:

ok, thanks for the suggestions. i got it to look better. opinions on the border? any imporvements i could make? the green area becomes snow, and the entire area is low fertility. heres the border:
