In the last two games I've played (which have been my MOST successful on HARD level), I have created ONLY YS, YA, SA, and WM (maybe a few No-Dachi). No Naginata, no ninjas, no Cavalry at all. Strangely, it seems to work fantastically.
(Note: I only play SP, so this wouldn't work in MP)
When the enemy has a bunch of cavalry, they die like roaches upon my Yari spears.
The only two difficult areas are:
1) Lots of archers
2) Lots of Yari Samurai
The archers problem is solved with a sprint (usually uphill) in LOOSE formation, ending with a CLOSE formation right as we collide.
The Samurai problem is only solved with good flanking and a few scattered MONKS.
It's working pretty well for me... (Note, I also make Shinobi by the millions).
Anyone else do a similar type of selective production?

My army composition of 16 units consist of 6 Archers, 5 Yari Samauris, and 5 Warrior Monks. Ashis are weak, No-Dachis die too fast, and naginatas are too slow to be of any use.

I tend to use lots of yaris and archers and usually some shock troops. I like to have a few cav to run the fleeing enemy down. But early on I use YA for this purpose. But YS probably my most popular unit.
