One of my favorite tactics is the Oblique Order. I advance with my strongest flank ahead of the other, falling back in gradual increments all the way to the other side so as to advance with a diagonal line. I deny the enemy his strongest flank (where I've placed my weakest troops), but crush his weakest with my best. Then I turn inwards and roll up the flank, meanwhile engaging each unit from the front. This way I do not have to engage more than a few units at the time, and these I get to completely surround before moving on to the next down the line.

Though, they are not as tank-like as the Pahlava or Sauromatae or Saka, or Diadochoi FM's... In the hands of the AI those take an awful long way to die; but the KH-boys drop pretty fast.
But slow enough that it won't really matter. They were real difficult to kill, only good thing being that once they ran, that's the end of them because they can't outpace my horses. KH hoplites are monsters. They can hold up against the pikes while you flank them with Thureophoroi (I won a battle against practically a fullstack with just two thureophoroi, one gaesatae and 4 lonchophoroi hippeis in oblique order). Pikemen break fast. Unless they're argyraspidai or chaonion of course.
My General FMs have survived insanely bad odds.Quote:

Oh, I am sure they will in the hands of a human player. But the tanks of the Pahlava, Saka, Sauromatae or Diadochoi take that one step further.Quote:

KH and Sweboz bodyguards are the best in the early game. You are not fighting so many field battles but a lot of sieges in this stage of the game, and they are excellent in forcing their way in any town or, in the case of KH, holding any part of a wall.
Later in the game the AI has more armies and you are fighting more open battles than sieges. In this stage of the game the heavy cavalry "for free" is desperatly missing. The Sweboz bodyguard is still by far your best infantry around and will be very usefull against the heavy armoured Celts and Romans.
The KH bodyguard on the other hand is just a better unit of Hoplites, of which you will have a lot in your army. Different to sieges, in field battles it is lesser likely that one unit will have to fight its way through several enemy units, and so the KH bodyguard are of lesser importance.

Tactics:
You can have a 5th Century army lining up lots of Hoplites supported by Peltastai (or any other swordfighters) as flankers.
You can have a 4th Century army using your Iphikratians instead of Hoplites (or a mixture of both).
According to the units' descripition, KH used a lot of Thureophoroi and Thorakitai in the 3rd Century. So that army will be more "Roman" with a lot of javelin throwing mobile units.
