Hmmm ...
STW: Yari samurai
MTW: the best spear unit available at the time, depending on faction
RTW: n/a
MTW2: n/a
I spam hastati with the Romans
RTW: Early Legionary Cohort or Phalanx Pikemen
EB: Milnaht (Belgae Swordsmen) or Akontistai/Toxotai (Hellenic Skirmishers/Archers)
M2TW: Billmen or Kazaks
Hmmm...
MTW:VI Either plain old Vikings, or Gallowglasses.
RTW: Probably Hastati, but only because I tendd to finish the game before having much time to play around with legionaries.
EB: Classical hoplites, largely because even when I wasnt playing the KH I'd still hire them as mercs all the time. A possible contender would be those early swordsmen the celtic factions get, the fellows with the longsword who actually wear shirts (can't rmember the name. :help: ).
MTW2: Hard to say, probably either Italian Militia or dismounted Dvor (the former as a bread and butter unit, and the latter as one of my all around favorite units and main component of my Russian armies).
Broken Crescent: So far, Sudanese Longbowmen, or maybe Saracen militia (crappy but cheap and plentiful). This will likely change as I try more factions.
The best available spearmen. Everything else would change depending on the era, types of cavalry, types of ranged weapons, but I always bring the top tier spearmen with my armies in quantity... and not pikes, halberds, etc.
Even in Broken Crescent where I'm playing a faction without good spearmen, my offensive and defensive armies always have a substantial collection of spearmen.
:egypt:
What faction are you playing, Ramses? I started out with Makuria, but am trying the Abbasids after feling sorry for their poor performance in an aar I read.

Armored Hoplites in Rome
Comitatenses in BI
Phalangists in Alexander

I don't play Shogun or Medieval often enough to have a common unit.

RTW: Round Shield Cavalry
MTWII: Spear Militia
I agree with most other posters - it tends to be spearmen. (The only exception is as Rome.) I am not sure if this is because they are good, or instead because they are the worst unit and so die a lot, needing to be replaced. They are cheap, low tech and can hold off the enemy long enough for the real battle winners to do their job.
My killer units tend to be archers and heavy cavalry, but they tend not to die and I keep their numbers down for realism and to maintain the challenge. The poor spearmen form the frontline and so get hammered by everything - archers, cav, swords and enemy spears. Swords tend to be better, but are harder to get and more survivable.
STW: Yari samurai
MTW: Chivalric sergeants (or feudal sergeants on early)
RTW: Hastati or principes
BI: Plumbatarii (so much better than comitatenses)
EB: Hastati or principes
M2TW: Armored sergeants (so much better than spear militia, but still lousy) - mercs if England
Hmm.. tricky
MTW: Vikings.
VI: Viking landsmenn
RTW: Hasati or legionaries.
BI: Comitatenses
MTW2: Dismounted feudal knights or Longbowmen.
RTW: Long Shield Cavalry (Carthage) and Hoplites (Greece)
MTW: Byzantine Infantry
RTW: Horse archers / Persian Cavalry
STW: not played.
MTW: Saracen infantery and steppe heavy cav (VI version)
RTW, only modded playing, so... RTR; Chalkaspidai and EB; Parthian noble horse archers.
MTW2, not played (are janissaries back?)
Yes, of course there's janissaries. :beam:
In Shogun, I think it's either Samurai Archers or Yari Samurai - like most of you. Not to say those are my favourites though, just two of the most useful units around.
In Medieval, it's probably something like Spearmen or Archers - some basic unit that you'd use a lot in the beginning of a campaign.
In Rome, either those Germanic Phalanx thingies (warbands?), Hastati or the Greek Phalanx thingies. Can't really remember.

In RTW it's mainly phalanxes.
In M2TW it's usually longbow or crossbow type units (with armour upgrades so they can also act as infantry) or some sort of pike unit.
"From the limited play that I achieve on RTW, it would have to be Hastati followed closely by Principes. I generally haven't played with another faction, but spearman always seem to be a good choice. Hastati/Principes are the bread and butter of the early roman legions and since I try to fight battles the traditional Roman way, the Hastati suffer the most casualties engaging the enemy first. (That is unless I get flanked) :shame:
Don't play the other TW series"
