Gordon of Khartoum Mod
I already posted this at Twcenter and am looking for feedback here too.
I am in the process of doing a feasibility study to see if a Focused mod is possible and would like some feedback.
I was thinking of something that is heavily scripted and set in one / two countries on a large scale map.
Primarily I was thinking of the Gordon at Khartoum scenario with a British/Egyptian relief force on its way from Egypt vs the Mahdi and his Jihadist warrirors.
You would play only as the British and the mod would start out with a Jihad called against Khartoum and the city invested by Madhists from the off. You have two or three small forces (reconnaisance in force type brigades) and the major relieving Column (possibly split into 3 units as well). These start over the Egyptian border from Sudan. The goal is for the British to relieve Khartoum and save the Queens favourite soldier before 10 months are up. (the 10 months are split into say 5 turns a month?? Not sure on this yet)
A Navigable Nile would be an idea to cover the gunboats used, they could possibly be set to carry only Artillery that they can disembark and use as riverborne artillery??? (is this possible) I don't mean firing from the ships but landing them as a small artillery force. Instead of flood events these could be changed to mud and debris clogging the Nile to reduce speed every so often so the gunboats dont race to Khartoum ahead of the main force.
Heavy Scripting of ambushs and attacks by separate Mahdist forces would then come in to play as they endeavour to stop the advancing Egyptians and British. Fog of war would play a major part.
The British would control the Gordon forces and the Relieving armies too.
Any sally attempt by Gordon would be mad as he is vastly outnumbered so it would be best to sit and wait and hold off the Mahdist attacks (if he can).
Also the forces will be stuck at their starting strengths, what you have is what you get , ie NO RECRUITMENT.
As for units (YES I KNOW ABOUT THE REVOLVING LINE PROBLEM) but I would be prepared to suffer it if I got the atmosphere right.
I would do the modelling - mainly of the British and Egyptians and would look about changing the arqubusiers stakes to Furze and tumbleweed to stop cavalry. A maxim would be a problem but I'd be prepared to forgo it If could use light artillery instead.
The Madhist infantry I would probably use a lot of standard MTW2 Islamist units and might just change some of the banners to suit.
Ok I know it sounds ambitious, the texturing and moddelling of the Brit/Egyptian units would be tough but what I want to know is, is something like this feasible as far as the scripting goes and the small Focused campaign using a detailed map? Also are supply lines used in MTW2?
This is only one idea of using MTW2 for more FOCUSED SMALL CAMPAIGNS, and If I can get this one off the ground then I have ideas for many more.
Any and all constructive feedback / ideas welcomed.
