Request for beta testers
Only a couple of the existing beta testers have reported their availability yet. Therefore we need some more new testers. We need both general testing and some specific tests we need run. So, what would it take to be a beta tester for us?
- First, you'd need some time on your hands. You don't need loads of it (loads doesn't hurt either), but enough to get a good dose of testing done every couple of days maybe.
- New players to RTW need not put themselves up to this, and new players to EB probably shouldn't either, as we need people who have a basic understanding of the mod at least. Seeing lots of problems where there really aren't problems is a hassle for us to explain after all.
- Another thing that we would prefer is if we sort of know you already, at least a little bit from being around the fora. Our first beta test experience famously failed as one of the testers leaked the build directly to other mods, and we definitely want control over who the testers are and we'd feel better about it if we knew you a little, or you've had a track record posting here or at TWC. There are new things that are added in the new build, and we need people who are going to keep their mouths shut about the new features for sure. So for us to understand the chances for this, be ready to tell us a little bit about yourself also (not in the first post really, unless you think it helps you a lot given things like a college major in one of these areas the mod deals with or other skills in modding and such, but we'll ask you in follow up PM's if we are interested).
- Patience. Some issues require repetitive testing to see how stuff varies, such as AI progression.
- Finally, being really really interested in the mod certainly helps. The beta testers have also been a big source of new EB members over the last couple of years, but that is not to be expected for sure. In each of our groups a couple of testers were so good at solving problems and finding bugs that we brought them onto the team just for that purpose - and most have since contributed in other areas too.
Our beta testers mainly do these things:
- Report bugs!
- Verify that bugs are fixed!
- Start up games with specific factions to test some of the new functionality. For instance (for 1.0, that is, not this time), the new Hayasdan reforms. Do they work if I follow the instructions? What happens if I do this instead? Is it possible to get triumphs with the romans now? That sort of thing.
- Test game balance, possibly coming up with ideas to improve it.
- Identify recruitment holes and oddities. Why are there no units in this region for the Ptolemaioi? Why are these Indian archers recruitable in Iberia?
- Regression testing. Does all the old stuff still work as they are supposed or is some of it broken?
- Play the game, reporting general bugs encountered such as missing UI cards and descriptions, crashes, spelling mistakes, glitches in unit appearances, inconsistent stats and other stuff that doesn't seem right.
- Ooh and aah at the marvellous advances of the internal build :clown:.
We aren't sure how many folks we need, but I know there is a need right now. Who thinks they have what it takes?

(I had some very long campaign with Epriros and KH, respectively in 0.81 and 0.74)
Putting it here to keep the applications in one place.

Re: Request for beta testers
Hey Bovi
Would love to help if I can, have been playing since 0.74 and been round here a little while now so please bear me in mind ;)
EDIT
I see people are bigging themselves up a little :p I want my chance too, I have a fair bit of experience in both modding and beta testing outside of this scene, I won't go into details here just give me a PM.
Cheers

Re: Request for beta testers
* First, you'd need some time on your hands. You don't need loads of it (loads doesn't hurt either), but enough to get a good dose of testing done every couple of days maybe.
I have loads. Loads and loads of free time on my claws. Let's say I have enough spare time to test stuff in one day that would usually take about three days.
* New players to RTW need not put themselves up to this, and new players to EB probably shouldn't either, as we need people who have a basic understanding of the mod at least. Seeing lots of problems where there really aren't problems is a hassle for us to explain after all.
I have decent knowledge of what causes crashes, inconsistencies and bugs. It's not great, but it's not nothing either.
* Another thing that we would prefer is if we sort of know you already, at least a little bit from being around the fora. Our first beta test experience famously failed as one of the testers leaked the build directly to other mods, and we definitely want control over who the testers are and we'd feel better about it if we knew you a little, or you've had a track record posting here or at TWC. Well, you can't really track it, but I've never betrayed someone in my entire 15 years of existence (Wow!), and I'm pretty solid when it comes to keeping secrets. Especially important ones.
I've answered some questions concerning bugs and stuff people didn't know on TWcenter, under the name of Elphir.
* Patience. Some issues require repetitive testing to see how stuff varies, such as AI progression.
See free time. And yeah, I'm a pretty patient person. If something doesn't work out, I try to relax, grab a drink and try it again.
* Finally, being really really interested in the mod certainly helps. The beta testers have also been a big source of new EB members over the last couple of years, but that is not to be expected for sure. In each of our groups a couple of testers were so good at solving problems and finding bugs that we brought them onto the team just for that purpose - and most have since contributed in other areas too.
Well, yeah, I believe this speaks for itself. Since I was 7, I've been very interested in Ancient Greece and Rome, and never stopped being interested. I'm interested in the mod because I want to give the public a good product in which they can enjoy themselves.
I've heard a statement once concerning games, and it said;
'It's better to postpone a release and have minimum bugs, than to release it soon and eventually give out patch 1.619'
=====================
Besides this, I'm a huge fan of the mod and just being able to contribute to such a great project would be a great honor.

At some point we decide who we want and send PMs to them. After those are sent, I will notify in this thread that the testers are chosen. I guess monday or tuesday.

Re: Request for beta testers
I volunteer too.
I've had EB since 0.7.4 times. I can do some miniscule modding stuff and got lot of time next week, less on the next and quite a lot after that.
*Edit* OO!! I forgot, I have done little testing to see if some rtw features were moddable. To be precise, I tested if the victory_conditions.txt worked with 1.5. I pressed a lot of end turns for two days, so I guess that covers the patience part. Also I did a quick check if the stat_heat would result in "out of supply" casualties.

Re: Request for beta testers
I would like a chance to help out with beta testing. I am not much of a poster here.. as you can tell.. but i am a long time lurker who loves the game. I play more then i ought to. It actually got me into my major, Classics. I like to think that it gave me an edge. I have beta tested before and even fooled around with modding from time to time. I would love to help out my favorite game. :2thumbsup:
